Does anyone know anything about wood pellet burners for heating a house?
Could I grow my own willows and use them. This oil is very expensive!

    :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Growing the stuff is not the problem!!
It is the shredding, drying and pelleting
that is going to cause some difficulty.

There are a number of small saw mills
and joinery works that are looking into
    installing the necessary plant.

Your idea might work if a co-operative
could be formed by say a dozen or more
growers - but co-operatives are always
    fraught!!!!

It might evolve that there will emerge
in time contractors - like silage contractors -
who will step in and offer a service.

BOILERS: Well there are dozens on the
market. Ranging in price for stoves at 2000+
to top end boilers systems by the Germans
    and Austrians at 15000+

It is a bit of a minefield out there - some
get-rich-quick people waiting to catch the
unsuspecting and gouging prices all over
the place. One crowd I spoke to wanted
500+ euros to do a simple installation.

I do not have any information on what are
the GOOD the BAD and the plain UGLY
    with regard to pellet boilers.

Maybe there are some good people out there
who have been using for some time and who
can tell us what is a good make.

The Irish company Gerkros do a boiler but
it has only ONE STEP modulation!! Essentially
that means it cannot adjust the output
to the requirement very well. I dont know what
the efficiency is. One of the Nordic boilers claims
    95% efficiency. That beats gas.

I think we should have a sticky for this, as it keeps coming up in a new thread once a week!

    WWW.SEI.IE Sustainable Energy Ireland
Has masses of information on alternative
energy and on the grants that are available.

For wood pellet systems, the grants are:

Wood Chip or Pellet Stove €1,100

    Wood Chip or Pellet Stove
    with integral boiler €1,800

    Wood Central Heating Boiler €4,200

These are excellent levels of grant.

I guess you will see the subject of
alternative energy nigh well worn to
a thread in the coming months.

Is there a problem discussing the subject
on these boards? I for one am very interested
in possibly changing out my oil boiler for
a wood fired system, and I would hope to
maybe gleen some helpful information by
discussing it with others, especially those
    with some technical knowledge.

I would humbly suggest that the administrators
of the board consider a thread dedicated to the
    subject.

if you search this site for 'wood pellet boiler', you'll find plenty of info on the tech side, the grants available (which are flat grants btw), few different threads about types and that as well. Happy hunting.
