Tough one - where I live there is a railway but no trains..

One is useless without the other.

But from a personal point of view, trains come and go but (some) railways stay forever..!

And long after the last train has gone you can still see their tracks...!

Will I get beaten up for that?!

    Don't understand the poll

    Trains - obvious

Railways - the bits of steel that are a set distance apart?

Did you see the loco-sexuals thread somewhere down the page?

Trains = locos, carriages, wagons, EMUs, DMUs, etc.

Railways = track, structures stations, etc. excluding trains

Some of the Irish-isms that I've heard include "Train station" "Train track" and the remarkable persistence in baby-talking mammies talking about "choo choos" to their kids when describing DART trains and Luas trams.

One of the major things that cured me of being a gricer many years ago was all the people passing remarks about their train being photographed. We really don't like people being interested in railways in Ireland, do we? I feel sorry for all the British gricers who get the p*** ripped out of them behind their backs on trains up and down the country.

    Ahh, Railways = Railway Infrastructure

My main interest is the infrastructure as I have spent the last 13 years carrying out upgrades & renewals to it. My current project involves the development and fitment of GSM-R cab radios though. I have been surveying loads of classes of trains recently and my wife now thinks I am a spotter for knowing each type of train :o

Nothing I like better at the end of the day than parking my long train into a nice, warm, moist tunnel and letting a bit of stem out of the hatch.

I don't see the problem with the "Irishisms", they are after all stations for trains and tracks for trains. It's not as if you might mistake a "train station" for an airport, are you? And try to explain commuter rail or light tram system to a two year old and you'll just get a funny look. Choo-choo will suffice and save you a lot of pointless explanation.

Are gricers train-spotters? How did that name come about, and is it just an attempt to make train-spotting sound cool?

As for the poll, not fussy really, as long as something shows up to get me into work on time. :D

I have a TGV locked away in my warehouse for most of the day, but many a cork girl has asked me if they could take it out and build up a head of steam. They insist on riding first class, and first class it is.
I've taken the odd european interrailer as well, but still prefer catering to the domestic market.

your TGV will be on the ballast if you try to use it in Cork.....:) :D
