FloppyDTV

I'm looking into assembling a PVR PC and came across this:
    FloppyDTV

    Anybody using this?

If I understand correctly, you *should* be able to use this bypass the NTL box, connecting the NTL smartcard to the tuner.

Is this allowed on NTL (the sales guy from Sky said he couldn't see any issue with doing so on the sky package)?

    Thanks

well I guess it will work as long as it supports the service provider's encryption.

I doubt NTL would be too pleased as theoretically you could have multiple boxes without paying an extra monthy fee or installation for em.

[edit] at €199 a pop, maybe its not such an issue for NTL afterall![/edit]

It's definitely do-able with Sky in fact there is a guide right here with similar hardware from another German manufacturer.

What SouperComputer said about the encryption is the thing to what out for; I believe you need a CAM which supports NTL decryption if the system works in a similar fashion to Sky's.

So how it may work is that you plug an NTL smart card into a CAM and then the CAM into the FloppyDTV.

They list supported CAM's on their site as well if that's any help.

NTL UK is using a (very) standard DVB-C encryption so I would assume NTL Ireland uses the same.
The only issue would then be authorisation from NTL.
BTW, SouperComputer, you would still need one NTL smartcard (therefore one subscription) in each PC using the FloppyDTV so that *shoud* take care of the multiple boxes issue.
The only reason I would want this is to record a digital program while watching another one.
So the last question is where/whom to ask...

In regards the encryption you should read this thread it's not just DVB-C encryption it seems..
They use the Nagra v1 encryption, which it's main encryption is a 512 bit (64 byte) RSA public exponent key that is stored on the smart card. The digital video encoding transmission uses the DVB-C standard.

There is a card but without CAM support, so it's only to receive freeview, such as BBC1, BBC2, ITV, CH4, CH5, which aren't encrypted:
    Hauppauge WinTV DVB-C.

I'd try contacting the Techno Trend guys as well, they seem to be the main source of DVB computer hardware for doing this kind of thing in the UK. Someone is bound to have asked them does it work with NTL & their DVB-C cards.

Aye, but I thought these cards were easy to copy no?

Just had a look at this thread.
Looks much more complex than that indeed.
