Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Setting up a secure wireless connection

    Hi
I'm trying to set up a weireless connection for my laptop. Currently I have a regular broadband modem(netopia) connected to my pc via an ethernet card. It has the usual one ethernet port and a dsl port.

I also have a netopia wireless modem. It has 4 lan ports and a dsl port. Am I right in thinking that I can attach my old modem into LAN1 and the DSL to the new modem? Or can I attach the moden directly to the pc's ethernet port?

From what I can see, there is absolutely no wireless securtiy in this setup. How can I fix this?
BTW I have googled this a few times and I cant find anything useful.
    Thanks,
    Kev

Get rid of the modem you currently use.

Connect the wireless modem to the dsl line, configure it with the ISP settings (username, password etc). Then connect PC to it using ethernet cable.

The original modem is redundant and serves no purpose.

Edit: In response to your how to secure query, read thru this forum, there have been posts about it in the recent past. Also the manual for your router will detail the steps needed to secure wireless.

Confused as to what you mean about "old modem"? (Is it a Dsl modem?)

But wpa-psk encryption with a good sentance as a password and some non alpha-numeric("/£$%^&*()") characters is the best way to make sure no one meeses with your wireless.

The longer the password and the more funny characters the harder it is to break and sentances wont be found easily by common attacks and are easy to remember(for me anyway).

    SANS guidelines:
    http://www.sans.org/resources/policies/Password_Policy.doc

If you are the only person connecting and you dont need to remember ur password after setup(crazy strength):
    https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

Dont use wep its badly broken(takes a little effort to break into).

if you want to explain the modem bit a little more someone here will help.
