Anybody used Calibel ( http://www.moyisover.ie/calibel.htm ) for sound proofing their homes?

I'm in my house a year now and have grown tired of listening to every single sound my neighbours make. Looking to sound proof and read about Calibel which, apparantly, has won awards for it's affectiveness.

I'm in a standard 3 bed semi with some kind of block party wall (dunno what type of blocks, I'm not a builder or anything) which was built within the last 3 or 4 years.

Have heard stories from people who heard stories from people that sound proofing one side of the party wall is no good but I haven't heard direct from anybody who has actually sound proofed, nor have I heard any hands-on reports on the quality of Calibel.

Anybody here any experience with it?

Dont know how much help this will be but we did a similar thing last year (husband works with plasterboard for a living though)

Our party wall in a 10 year old house consisted of just a cavity block and then a regular plasterboard dabbed against it and was tape and joined. Had similar problems with airborne noise (the likes of voices carrying, tv and music etc) so we put 2 15mm 'blue' (acoustic rated) plasterboards against the existing party wall and then got the wall plastered and filled in with fire rated expansion foam along the floorboards and ceiling. - cost approx 500 euro

It has made a fairly good difference and has certainly muffled alot of the noise but hasnt stopepd it completely - just made it more bearable! He since heard that another solution would be to put a layer of ply or cork against the partywall and then apply new boards as both cork and ply have good dampneing qualities against airborne noise.

We looked into the calibel sheets but what put him off was that it was just a regular 9mm plasterboard against the insulation and wasnt the acoutic rated board. However it is meant to be a very effective product but comes at a price...Brooks Thomas are stockists and have a price of approx 30-35 euro per sheet!!!

A better solution would be to strip back to the actual blocks themselves, put battens on and pack with rockwool then apply plasterboards. This crowd www.atil.ie are also worth contacting as specialise in this type of thing.

Whatever you do its a big job, it means you are losing some inches off the wall and you'll also have to match in with coving etc - as well as getting someone to do it but even the method we used has made a good difference.

If its a new house, it might be covered with homebond and you could get a soundtest done to see if it comes up to standards - if not then builder will be responsible for all the work rather than you!

Have a look at www.askaboutmoney.com as there's a very good thread there in homes and gardens section about exactly this issue.

    Dear Clum,

I was wondering what measures you eventually took to soundproofing your house and how effective it was.

I need to soundproof my house as part as a total refurbishment of the house. Calibel has been suggested to me as a product to use.

    Many thanks.
