    Hi-
Have horribly embarrassing problemo. I've recently met the girl of my dreams. She's amazing, but the thing is, she's really into jazz, and I know almost nothing about it. Unfortunately,I told her I love it, and now I spend every conversation nodding and hoping to god she doesn't ask me any questions. What kind of stuff can I start listening to to ease me in? She's only 18, but seems to like kind of old-school stuff- talks a lot about Ry Cooder and Ali Tourke- I mean, they're dead right??? help!!!!

That's a good way to start a relationship...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz and http://www.google.ie
    Read, listen, and learn.

i genuinely didn't mean to. i just got talking to her and then i couldn't get out of it. and i can't tell her cause she'll think i'm a compulsive liar! she's perfect, there is no way i have a shot with the psychopath thing. and thanks for the links, but that's a lot of information- in layman's terms- what's cool? what's good? basicly, what's going to impress her? (oh the shame) :-(

Say Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" is your favourite album like everyone else who listen to jazz. Then get a p2p program and download a few songs by every artist she mentions. You should get away with it until you can actually get a basic knowledge of jazz. Until your 25th wedding anniversary when she finds out the truth from a drunk relative and kills herself because she realised shes been living a lie with you for decades. Hope things work out for you two.

I reckon you should keep it simple. Not everyone that's into jazz is a jazz geek, not everyone knows all the names and stuff... you could be one of those guys. You like jazz but your not a jazz geek... I'd go with that.
In the mean time, you should try listening to some jazz and see what you think. Also bring her to some gigs... check out theboomboomroom.tv

Seconded. Big Ken will sort you out

It wouldn't do you any harm to buy Talking Timbuktu (that's Ry Cooder and Ali Farka Toure, and only Ali is dead btw - R.I.P)
Just do a bit of reading, get a few albums off this list. It's www.allaboutjazz.com 's Building a Jazz Library. This list has the big albums most fans would have heard.

    Bonne Chance ;)

Don't worry, if she was REALLY into Jazz, she would be on this forum.... right.... now.... As for advice on what to say, listen to Jazz for a while and you can't help but develop your own opinions.

don't even joke about that, that could potentially be the most embarrassing thing ever experienced by anyone, jazz-related or not. i don't really have time to develop opinions, i've got to pounce before i get put in the "friend" pile forever. im beginning to think i should just come clean. this doesn't seem like the kind of thing i can continue to fake- she's an argumentative young lady. :-0

Tell her you really like the B section to Miss Jones. Oh and tell her you prefer Countdown to Giant Steps...

Then tell her you don't know much about jazz but you dig her...
