Considering The PS3 is going for €630 with no games etc I am thinking I may just hold on from getting it and upgrade my pc...

my main TV (i.e. the TV in my sitting room) is NON HD but I do have a 23" Philips with HD in the bedroom but I heard for HD to really come to the fore it has to be a 32" inch or bigger??!!??!

Basically with my SSIA coming out in March next I have 'cleared' about a grand/1500 with the missus and wondering what I should put the money into...

If I go PS3 then I would get a bigger HD TV in the sitting room, which would not be cheap whereas I could upgrade my pc to a gaming god easily with 1500 to spend!

Any advice on what to do with my precious precious 'allowance' ha-ha

Which one has more games you want?

Well the PC has more games at moment obviously!! My pc runs very well playing FEAR, COD2 Farcry, Half Life 2 no probs (well FEAR is pushing it to its limits) and with directx 10 / vista coming out it could mean some killer titles for the pc in 2007 'crysis' i'm looking at you...

so far there hasnt been a whole being shown game wise on the PS3 apart from gran turismo, metal gear solid etc at E3 ...but the games will take off on the PS3. The thing thats getting me is the choice between a decent sized non HD tv or a smallish HD tv is starting to turn me off the PS3 till i can afford a good sized HD tv for the sitting room

Surely you'd spend all if not most of your 1500 on the 32"+ HDTV alone, then you're spending between 800-900 on a PS3 w/ 2-3 games and an additional controller
I personally would go with a new PC; by the time the PS3 has enough AAA titles available you should have saved up enough for it anyway.

Pc hands down. Then again I am a raging PC fan boy so...

I'd pick the PC just because you can do more with the PC than you could with a PS3, and there will be a raft of AAA titles available at varying pricepoints from the moment you buy it, as opposed to having to wait 6 months or so for something on the Ps3.

Besides, how are you going to download porn with a ps3, huh? HUH?

PC, I can sense the PS3 being a big disappointment ;) And the same for Blue Ray, get a new gfx card and maybe some more memory for pc, PC will always be best for most shooters/RPG/RTS etc... And for the consoley type games for pc (Pro Evo) theres always game controllers,

I am a pc fanboy but imo pc upgrade ftw, and this so called PS3 prob wont come out for ages,

    Good luck

I'm going to have to go with PC. By the time the PS3 has enough games to warrant the price it will prob have come down to something a little more reasonable.

Wonder what Eddie Hobbs would say :)

Well, if you already have a PC that runs all the top games at the moment, is there any need to upgrade just for better frame rates? Pretty much any game released in the next 2 years or so will still run on your machine if you don't mind toning down graphics options.

So if you lump all the money on a PC, you'll enjoy better frame rates, but you'll never be able to play any of the games that come out on PS3. If you get a PS3 on the other hand you'll be able to play everything on both sides, just making some sacrifices to graphics sliders when it comes to the PC.

And a 23" HDTV is still better than a 17"-19" monitor which I assume you'd be using with your PC. I'd at least wait till after the World Cup to make my decision, I've heard stores have stocked huge amounts of TVs for the tournament and will be offloading leftovers afterwards.

And I wouldn't pass over the xbox 360, it's cheaper than a PS3 and will have a strong library of games by Christmas. Depends whether or not you want the Blu Ray functionality really.

Thanks all for the comments. The porn issue is covered though because I already have a PC wahoo!

steviec - my pc is a 3.4Ghz Pentium 4 with HT, 1 gig of RAM and 9800Xt 256mb gpu - its no slouch but being stuck on AGP board is not helping matters...games like oblivion/FEAR are really stressing my GPU (which is already heavily overclocked) even with some eye candy turned down and no HDR.
PCI express with Conroe, windows vista and directx10 could be a nice combination for pc gamers in the near future...

regarding the monitor issue my monitor is a 19" LCD but I don't think there's that much of a difference from a 23" LCD TV considering your sitting right in front of a monitor whereas the TV is 7/8 feet away...

While not a big gamer, i did attempt it, after a few months i gave away my PS2 to my nephew, personally i hate them damn controllers, whilst with a pc i have no problems and quite enjoy playing games, bought my first game in about 3 years, FEAR and its pretty cool, just straighforward controls using your mouse and keyboard much handier and is a pleasure to play using a decent PC and flat panel monitor. Miles better in my humble opinion.

    Have you considered a Xbox360?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 peterk24/7

You can jut wait a few months ad the PS3's price will have dropped. I would still just get a PC upgrade as there is more games for it and it is cheaper.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,040 ✭✭✭jones

Good point about the Xbox 360 but its still the HDTV issue...I think I might just go with the general consensus and upgrade the pc and then get the PS3 when it becomes cheaper and with a few AAA titles under its belt!!!

    ^^

Mentioning that Vista there is a interesting review above on how Vista hadles PC games, I am quiete impressed, Vista comes with a game browser which automaticly downloads games covers, info and puts all the shortcuts into one nice user friendly mode, this makes Vista look more and more likely to be a great companion to games.

//Off topic: Read in this review the reviewer said only incompatable game was Chaos Theory Ubisoft game only because Vista wont get the "Starforce" copy protection drivers signed, I think this is great, finally Starforce is loosing, that piece of c##p managed to destroy my CD Burner, Glad to see microsoft blocking it ;)

    Good luck,

buy a ps3 on launch day. get in the queue, hand over your €600+ and go home. then promtly get yourself an eBay account and make an extortionate amount of money on it. then, a few months later, upgrade to a new PC with DX10 and a fancy processor setup, AND get another ps3 ;)

Work out a way to get both. Eventually.

    Heavenly Sword says PS3..

    hsnew25ea.jpg

    Supreme Commander says PC..

    Supreme_Commander_E3-13.jpg

How can one choose between such beauties? <3<3

But really, if I had to go one route, I'd probably get the PS3. The first 6 months should be hot hot hot for games ('only' MGS4 and GT? Check out Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Resistance, UT2007, Virtua Fighter 5, Assassin's Creed, Tekken 6 etc. - all should arrive in the first few months!) , and there's the HD movies and Linux on the hard disk to play with too. But that's just me..ultimately I'd have both!

    Get a wii and a projector/screen.
It'd be kickass to play metroid with that controller on a screen that size.

Look, don't expect to be able to buy a Ps3 for €600 on launch;)

Like the 360 there will be shortages therefore it will only be sold in bundles.
Expect to be paying up to €900 or even €1000
I would go with the PC

wasn't there some linux kit for the ps2? I wouldnt be suprised if were saying the same thing about the ps3 in a years time.

yeah but that was really so sony could get tax breaks by saying the ps2 is really a PC in europe. this time there's a HDD with linux pre-installed so they can do the exact same thing

Here's a mad thought. Seeing as you don't actually need a new PC right now, how about not blowing your hard saved cash until you actually do need an upgrade?

That's what I was saying. You say there's no early PS3 games at launch that catch your interest, but by the same token there's no PC games that close on the horizon that you'll actually need a new PC for either. And in the long run the PS3 will open a lot more doors for different games than a slightly better computer will.

Why not use the money to buy/build a mame machine.
