    my ping is haywire.
I'm on NTL cable. the 2/3 meg line.
I have a belkin router in between it and my computer.
    Everything is done thru ethernet.

My ping to the belkin router is a solid <1ms
My ping to other computers is a solid <1ms
my ping to the likes of www.boards.ie is (sample)

I can't play games on it at all. I thought the line would be a fairly solid one. On www.irishisptest.com I get 1.97mb download speed, which is near perfect for a 2meg line (I rang NTL there requesting a line upgrade to a 3mb - but that's hardly the problem)

So I guess I'm asking is how do I trouble shoot to find the cause of the problem?

Upgrades seem to cause problems for a few days and usually things settle down again.

Used to get those mad spiky pings on IBB but as said b4 it might be to do with them upgrading the basestation perhaps.

ah grand, didn't realise there was an unsettling stage during upgrade. I'm still on 2mb. I'll moan to them in a few days if it stays the same... looks like no games for me till then.

I couldn't wait. I rang them up... I'm still on the 2meg connection (they seem to be pretty slow - I asked them 1 month ago... but they don't have any record of it)
I was talking to someone in Broadband support, very knowledgeable chap, talking about latency, different routes to different servers and such.

He kept saying the same thing over and over and I felt I was getting no where. I downloaded off the Heanet for him, I got a solid 240kbps on a file download, but I'm still getting spikey pings:

I can't play any games with this. They haven't even started to upgrade me. I don't think the upgrade will do anything for the speeds. I'm even contimplating on going back to reliable Eircom...

An NTL technician came out to the house. Apparently there is "noise" at the node. This particular node (galway - Menlo/Terryland area) will be fixed on Monday, hopefully.

Just goes to show that if ur not happy, keep ringing back and demand it to be fixed.

Did you try and tracert to see if the issue is on the ntl network or are you only doing ping results

Ive had NTL in this area of galway since january and my pings are the exact same as yours, all over the place... and they've been like this since day one...

id be shocked if its fixed on Monday!

Can you do a tracert to boards.ie to see where the problem lies?
