laptop crashes using external hdd

    my mate has a compaq evo laptop(will get exact model number later) running windows nt .he can plug in an external hdd and browse trhrough the files.but if he tries to transfer to or from the hdd,the pc crashes-bsod.changed some bios settings but no luck.
    any ideas on how to fix it or what could be causing it.

    Update the latest driver for the motherboard and if avalible USB drivers. This should help.

    afaik windows nt has no support for usb. he might have to upgrade to xp. i found some drivers here for a few devices http://tinyurl.com/mg5ap. google ( nt and usb ) and you will find some more.

    i have a problem with a usb hard drive before so I plugged in a powerd usb hub and that worked ok.
