Boss is letting me air out his boat this weekend, its moored in Killaloe in return for cleaning it i get to use it sunday/monday and was wondering could someone suggest a nice route around the loch for the day, moor (how do you spell that :) ) maybe overnight somewhere onboard and back down monday.

Havnt driven a boat in about 10 years so is there anything dangerous or special I need to know about using Lough Derg? Ive been through everything on the IWAI website and downloaded their maps.

How long would it take to get from Killaloe to Dromineer and on to Portumna?

You work out the distance and the order in which you want to visit the locations.
I will suggest that you visit Dromineer (great for a night stopover - good food and pubs.), Terryglass, Scarrif, and or, Mountshannon. I would not bother with Portumna.

Terryglass is lovely, was there last weekend. If you can book a meal in the Derg restaurant in Terryglass its well worth it. Service might not be top notch due to it being so busy, but the food is great.

Was also in Scarrif and Mountshannon, but alas the weather was a bit dodgy so not much going on on the Lough at all.

Thanks for the replies. Do we have to book in advance to tie up in dromineer or the other jetties or can we just appear?

Also do any of the islands on the lake have jetties for visiting?

Nope no need to book in advance, you can just turn up, but on a busy weekend, which I expect this will be if you're late arriving you may have to moore abreast of other boats.

Can't think of any jetties on the islands, but I might be wrong on that.

Any time we've gone there's been a gang of seven or eight, try to book any meals in advance if possible.

Enjoy, I'm so jealous, brilliant weather too.

As already mentioned the trick will be to bag your parking space early this weekend

I'd go along with what the other said. I'd reccomend the Whiskey Still in Dromineer for a night. Malachy the owner is Mr. Lough Derg !;)

I know you have the "maps" off of the IWAI website but i would still buy the full size version from one of the hire boat companies tomorrow. Well worth the 10 euro or so !

Derg is really a long lake / river and without a compass it is surprisingly easy to get disorientated ! So pay attention to where the reefs and rocks are!

Most of the black marks carry letters from A to J. use these as your refs..

    Enjoy
