Is it me or is there a major increase in convertable cars about the place?? 5 of them have driven past me in the last 2 days, I know the weather has something to do with it as you mightened notice them as quick with the roof up.

I dont ever remember so many around even in hot summers.

They couldnt all have won them on the Late Late, LOL!

    You're not alone.
    I noticed loads today too.

Was by the coast though so if you're gonna see them anywhere, it'd be there.

I walked down to the shop earlier, saw 4 over 2 minutes. Also saw a guy in a Lotus Elise yesterday.

I've seen alot more lately aswell. Not just convertables but also 2 door sports car aswell.

Yep, I've seen a good few over the last few days. Obviously the weather is the main reason for the increase, but I think, like one of the above posters said, convertibles have become more affordable. e.g Peugeot 206 cc etc.

Certainly a fair few of those cabriolet peugeot 206s about driven by young ladys in business suits up round our way.

Hmmm...have seen a few more 'convertible bleached blondes jaw attached to a mobile while taking a roundabout' types out.

I never see them in the winter - like I never see people driving around in them with the tops up - maybe I just dont notice. Where do they keep them and how can they afford to have one car for sun and one for rain?????

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Plenty of milfs in cabrio Renaults these days :)

Boss, it's ignorant not to know the names of your staff. His name is Jeeves, not jives

many convertibles these days have hard tops so stand out less when the roof is up

I read/heard somewhere that Britian & Ireland have the highest percentage of convertible car ownership in the world!

Actually I read somewhere that the south east of the UK has the best weather conditions for convertibles. Apparently the likes of the south of Spain, France and Italy, etc are too hot in the summer for a convertible, you end up being burnt with the hood down, the seats are also burning your arse and generally the plastics in the car are also roasting.

I rented an Audi A4 convertible a couple of years ago in Malta and it was very uncomfortable at times.

Yep, I thought of this too but there was a 205 convertible back in the '80s and an Escort too.

It's the Celtic Tiger/cheap finance malarky...

Exactly. Most people assume that a convertible is only for when the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the temperature is in the 30's, but this is when it is possibly the most dangerous. The thing is that when it's that hot, and you're tooling around at any kind of speed, the cooling effect of the breeze lulls you into a false sense of security, and on to major sunburn (voice of experience there!).

Whereas in reality, any day of the year when it isn't actually raining (which is actually quite a lot, despite what people might think, even in Ireland) is perfect weather for open top driving.

I hired a softtop Mr2 in Greece and kept the top up as my arms got sizzled! And you have to keep the top up for the aircon to work!

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Well, I've my MINI Cooper convertible, and it rocks in the summer. Even on sunny cold days its sweet, roof down, heat on your feet, heated seats on, and it's the closest thing to my bike except on 4 wheels.

Course, you'll always get begrudgers :-)

Unless you're kicking it "California Style": top down and aircon on.

Anyway, all those convertibles you think you're seeing are just me driving all over in the gorgeous weather.

    It's a Mini, not a Ferrari ;)

Maybe I'm alone here but I think people driving around in convertibles in freezing Ireland on an overcast day with heated seats on is a bit pointless

don't knock it till you try it :D

And you can't beat driving in the dead of night in summer with the top-down.

Definitely not. That's an incredible feeling. You get all the benefits of a bike, and the relaxation of a car.

Yeah I agree with Frank and Ned !

I look forward to those nights when I drive my wife into town for a night out, then drive back in the Pagoda, top down and some cool sounds on, low enough so I can still hear the gurgle !

Those moments are what life is all about !

Nothing beats driving an open topped classic car in decent weather !
