What makes a Decent Radio Show for you?

On my way to/from work it really sticks out at me how many people have switched from radio to listening to there Ipod/Zen etc.

For me, I tend to listen to Dunphy/Hook/Cooper. But, when I want to listen to music (between 7 -10 and 4-6) I just can't find anything decent at all. It's atrocious as has been declared here a few times.

What I'm looking for are opinions on what would make a good show.
    Here's mine :

A simple programme of music, play a song, play a short add, play a song, play a short add and so on. No need for DJ's except maybe to name the song. And, the music couldn't be any pop pap like Britney, Westlife or Girls Aloud etc.

If the news has to be given, keep it strictly to the headlines, 5 word weather like on Spin and absoloutely NO traffic reports unless there's a major crash.

    That would keep me listening.
    What about you?

I think that music should be a major component on the National stations on Friday afternoons/evenings from about 5pm onwards. If you think about it, this is when a lot of people are driving home from Dublin to other parts of the country for the weekend.

That said, I love my political commentry and current affairs so as long as at least one station keeps that up I'm happy :)

Ditto on Tony Fenton, also Dave Fanning for me!

Get Matt Cooper and Tom Dunne to do a show every day from 9:00 to 5:30, alternating good music and interesting chat.

I'd prefer a few songs, then a few adverts and so on, rather than alternating one after the other.

The news reports annoy me a bit, because I also listen to either Newstalk or Matt Cooper in the evening and what tends to happens is there is a long debate about a current news story, and then they have to cut to the news where you are told about the news story that has just been discussed. The traffic's pretty much the same - being told that 6PM that the M50 is moving slowly.

It would be cool if there was a show just like Tom Dunne's, but at the same time so you can choose between the news commentary or the music. Listened to Dave Fanning for a brief period, but I couldn't make out what he was saying - anyone else had this problem?

If you're in Clondalkin, Ballyfermot or Palmerstown i do a show on Wednesday Evenings between 7 and 8 called Off the Cuff.

Lots of music and very little chat and i'm sure you'll hear something you've never heard before and something you have'nt heard in a while.

    Well anyway f you're interested

sense of humour. i like the whole setup where you have one or two DJ's, and their funny friends in studio. good banter, bit of music, some ads (necessary evil i guess) and if news must be done, like the op said, keep it to a minimum.

I like magazine style shows, usually at between 8-10am and 5-7pm. Interesting news items from the trivial to the serious, what's going on about town, interviews, music and a bit of banter. To be honest I find Irish radio boring in comparison to some British stations but my inclination favours Spin in the morning and Q102 in the evening.

I think that magazine style shows are usually pretty good but I don't see the problem with occassional 'specialist' magazine shows.

I do think that the Sunday Business Show on today FM is one of the best shows on Irish radio.

As the title implies, it's on on Sundays and it's about business and it's a show...on the radio...you get the picture :o:D

Anyway, these would be my favourite style of show. As a book lover I find a lot of the shows on http://radio.oneword.co.uk:8000/ to be particularly good :)

I only listen to talk radio mainly newstalk, for music I listen to what ever I have on my mp3 player.

I've given up on the radio for music.

A majority talk show with more than one host having a laugh!

Dempsey & D'arcy are musically illiterate the absoulte cack they play on their shows is disgraceful. Status Quo or BellX1 take your pick. People who appreciate quality music is what needed

Im a fan of shows that have more than one presenter. Is more humouros anything but Dave Fanning. The guy's voice just does my head in

Only listen to radio in the car. Dunphy in the morning and Hook in the afternoon. The only drawback is I can't stand Michael Graham on Friday's but Hookie is a legend, normally slap a CD on when Graham is on.

My iRiver gave up the ghost recently. I spent a week switching between radio stations - wacky 'comedy' radio in the mornings, 'Drugs are bad m'kay' sanctimonious self-righteous talk show rubbish in the afternoon, apalling pop music, endless, endless irritating advertising, the same news over and over again all day, aaargh

Ive ordered a new iRiver off ebay, and until then I'll listen to the sound of my engine.
