rear tyre wear

I noticed today that one of my rear tyres has worn, on the inside track. It is the drivers side rear. The other rear is still perfect. The 2 fronts are also fine and car is driving ok.

What would cause the rear tyre to wear like this? Any help would be appreciated.

Would that affect the rear wheels?

Rear tracking is usually unadjustable on front wheel drive cars. Also, if your tracking is out then both tyres are usually affected to some extent. If only one tyre is worn then its more likely to be the camber that is out. It is also possible that these tyres were on the front at one stage and the wear may have been caused there.

Best to get four wheel alignment checked to be sure.

If the camber is out is it fixable?

Camber can be adjusted on some cars but it takes specialist equipment and skills. What car is it, does it have the same tyres on all four corners, is it possible the tyre wear took place on the front and the tyre was swapped to the back, are the pressures all correct?

Often if a tyre is underinflated for a long period, the edges will wear as the centre 'concaves' up under the force of the sidewalls acting down. A badly worn wheel bearing, a twisted raduis arm or failed radius arm bearing could also do this but these would give serious handing errors and in the case of the bearing, a lot of noise.

Check the pressures and report back...

i had the same problem. only one of my tyres was worn and it was only half of it. had to get the tracking done. rear wheel tracking can only be done in certain garages that have the right equipment. i've an audi and found advance pitstop did it. they don't do all makes. cost €50 to track all 4 wheels.

I've worked on several cars with the same problem and found it to be the rear wheel bearing worn!!

on one car it was actully so bad the owner had to put the radio on very loud to drown out the noise of the grinding and didnt think to get it checked til he asked me to service it!!

others were gone but not making a lot of noise and owners didn't notice till a nearly new tyre was on the wires on the inside!!

I'd agree with that. Worth having the bearings checked before any adjustment is done to the rear geometery.

In that case get the shocks checked too.

Back axle may have taken a sideways wallop also kicking 1 wheel out of true.

Could be an under inflated tire. Wheels are at a slight angle anyway, although not sure about the back ones. check your pressure and see.
