Six people have died on Irish roads in the past 48 hours, including three in the North.

This brings to 176 the number of lives lost so far this year on roads in the Republic and 55 in Northern Ireland.

In the Republic three people died on the roads in Co Kilkenny, Co Tipperary and Co Dublin, bringing to five the number of people killed since the start of the Garda road campaign Operation Lifesaver on Friday.

Those who died in Northern Ireland were a milkman, who is believed to have been hit by his float in north Belfast, a woman who died when a car hit a skip in south Belfast, and a man who was killed when his car went off the road in Co Tyrone.

Gardaí in Co Dublin, are investigating a fatal road collision which happened at about 5.30am yesterday in Glenvar Park, Crosse Avenue, Blackrock.

A motorist in his thirties was fatally injured when his car hit a tree. He was alone in the car at the time.

Gardaí in Carrick-on-Suir, last night named the 20-year-old man killed in a head-on collision as Daniel Mahon from Kilvemnon, Mullinahone, Co Tipperary.

The crash occurred at Kilcash on the main Clonmel to Kilkenny road. The man who died was alone in one of the cars.

The other driver, who was also alone, was removed to Ardkeen Hospital, Waterford. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Gardaí in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny, have named a 42-year-old motorcyclist who died after his bike struck a ditch at Baronsland on Saturday, as James Lee, Kilree, Bennettsbridge.

Mr Lee was travelling on the Bennettsbridge to Thomastown road at Baronsland when the crash occurred.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival in St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny.

In the North, an 18-year-old woman was killed after the car she was travelling in collided with a rubbish skip in south Belfast at 6.30am yesterday.

The 20-year-old driver of the car was arrested and was last night helping police with their inquiries.

Another man who was sitting in the front seat of the car was taken to hospital, though his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Harry Kerr (46), Tavanagh Street, died in Sunningdale Drive, north Belfast, during his milk round at 6am on Saturday.

Aidan O'Kane (44), Dunnamanagh, Co Tyrone, died after his vehicle left the Aghafad road near Strabane at 2am on Saturday.

The 95-year-old man who died in a crash on Friday at Coole, Co Westmeath, was named as John Clarke, Lismacaffrey, Co Westmeath. Mr Clarke died when his car and a JCB collided.

Gardaí have also named an 85-year-old woman who died on Friday as Nuala Friel, Clonmany, Co Donegal. She was a passenger in a car which collided with a minibus at Ballyliffin, Clonmany.

Yeah, I think Martin Cullen should try to benchmark us with Spain, and try to match their rate of road deaths per year.
We can worry about matching countries like Holland, France and Germany in the future. For the near future, lets work on Spain's record,. I believe it's more achieveable, and then we can end our comparisons of Ireland against third world countries, we can confidently compare ourselves with Spain with pride.
