There are a few results for different distance learning doctorates coming up on Google, mostly with US universities. Perhaps mail the institutions and ask can you study on their programs from Ireland.

I think you will find that no matter where you do your Doctorate, there is very little requirement to be physically present in an institution.

I know of people doing doctorates in the UK from Dublin.

what you should be looking for is a "part time" PhD.
    not "distance learning".

Most PhD's can be done partime.

The only difference between a parttime and full time phd is that you are required to be registered for 5 years for parttime and the fee's are less.

I'm interested in doing a taught doctorate as opposed to a full research one.

    Does such a thing exist?

    No,I've never heard of one.
PHD is basically a way of Colleges / Companies getting research done cheaply .

It is possible to obtain a Doctorate degree via a taught study programme. This would involve the production of a shorter thesis (approx. 40,000 words) in addition to the taught components of the programme.

Taught Doctorate degrees are DEng. (Doctor of Engineering), DMus.( Doctor of Music), DEd. (Doctor of Education), DBA. (Doctor of Business Administration) and DClinPsych. (Doctor of Clinical Psychiatry). Etc

What are you looking for from a PhD?

A degree is only as good as the institution awarding it.

I *suspect* it's not possible. Taught doctorates tend to be more practical/professional in nature, which doesn't lend itself particularly well to the distance learning option.

At Doctorate level, you still need to perform an element of research. From the Doctorates I have looked at (Doc. Education), all of them require a research based thesis, I would be very surprised if a Science based Doctorate did not have similar requirements.

I'm prepared to do a element of research as well, I've found this at Walden University http://www.waldenu.edu/c/Schools/Schools_6955.htm

A Taught doctorate in public health specialising in Epidemiology, Specialization includes, plus a thesis

PUBH 8300 Epidemiology of Infectious and Acute Diseases
PUBH 8310 Social and Behavioral Epidemiology
PUBH 8320 Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology
PUBH 8330 Epidemiology of Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases
PUBH 8340 Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology
PUBH 8350 Field Methods and Data Analysis in Epidemiology

Once again I have to ask what is your goal in doing a Phd?

If its just to further your education then whats wrong with a standard part time PhD?

Further my education, for various reasons a distance learning phd would be better for me

I think you are missing our point.

Doing a PhD part-time might as well be by distance education.
