    I thought honours paper 1 was pretty shocking.....everyone else seemed to also. Q5 c) I didn't get out, I got a result different to the one shown above. The graph in question 6....I had my points but I didn't have a clue how to draw it.

    I got 3 a) wrong too! It was the 'real' part that confused me, because I didn't think you coulc let it equal to a + 0i.

    2 b)ii) what was your explanation on why the roots were real? I said that since t was an integer, the expression could be positive or negative, ie. it was on either side of the x-axis -> curve cuts the x-axis -> real roots.

    Realised afte though that it almost definitely followed from the b^2 - 4ac thing in i) though.

    Overall not that happy with it, especially as Maths is one of the subjects I need to do well in
    Well in b (i) i got that the roots were real when they were less than 0 and greater than 8/9. So all integers fit those requirements.

    Did anybody get 2C?

    still trying it here and getting nowhere!!

    easily the most infuriating question on the exam as looked easy enough but was far from it!

    (Honours)

    you use the b^2-4ac result in Q2. B ii) also. 9t^2>-8t and if t is an integer that statement is always true.

    Therefore, the roots are real.

    It was all based on the fact that if you square a non-integer as in a fraction it gets smaller and therefore could make the result<0

    yeah there is a russian math genius in my school (he is ACTUALLY a genius), and he thought the paper was quite hard. he still thinks he got an A1 though:rolleyes:

    same here... :D

    which is actually really good, cause if you reckon you've done that well when others haven't, you're bound to be doing well!

    I got a nasty looking log for that, -(1/2)logb(b+1)

    Yeah I think I did, I used logs.

    What did you get for b(i)?

    Exactly what I got:D
    Edit: Except my answer was a natural log.

    Score. I moved the minus a half inside the log though and turned it into a root with a power of -1 because it looked tidier though =D

    Yeah the range of values I got for it to be negative were -8/9 and 0, i think, and since and that range contains no integers (it was less than or equal to, dealing with the 0) then the integers had to be positive. Obviously that's a terrible explanation, but I can't really remember the question, that's the jist of it though.

    ****ing biatch of a paper recognised nothing, when i saw 1 a i starting singing livin on a prayer i was ****tin myself, i reckon i recovered well to take about 125 marks so i better get on ta paper2 at least there is a bit of procedure to it, scarily like my mock paper which the school never gave us back!!

    A natural log? Did you get a lod of both sides to start then? My method:

    1=b^(2x) (b+1)
    1/(b+1)=b^2x
    logb(1/b+1)=2x
    x=1/2(log1-log(b+1))
    x=-1/2log(b+1)

    yeah

    and then you graph it and you have -7/8 <(or=) t <(or=)0

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

    yeah

    and then you graph it and you have -7/8 <(or=) t <(or=)0
    Which includes no integers! QED

    Although I had 0 and 8/9...

    yeah i got that 2 shane
    :D Yeah now all we need is a nice paper 2

    (-8/9)
    Ah, i left out the minus from the -4ac. Probably only a slip though, I hope.

    Edit: Last years, by far

    In complex numbers Q4 part(b)(i)
    Slove z2 -4z +29 in the form x + yi how did you do it? Did you use (z + )(z - )??
