Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

World Cup Day 1

Well, its finally here. The afct Ireland arent there doesnt bother me inthe slightest.

    Today we have

    Germany Vs Costa Rica 5pm
    and
    Poland Vs Ecuador

There will be a 30 minute opening ceremony before the game kicks off.

First game should be interesting. The opening game is becoming a traditional shock at this point almost. The germans are fairly lack lustre, but to use the cliche, never write them off. I know absolutely nothing about Costa Rica, so cant really comment.

Likewise with the second game really, I know very little about both, but having seen Poland a few times in qualifying, they look sharp and quick. Ecuador will want an improvement on last times competition.

Should be a good day, of a better weekend, of a better week, of a magic month.

Costa Rica lost there 3 warm up games.

If Scheider and Schweinsteiger can supply quality crosses for the strikers, Germany should win easily.

    germany will win, just

    1-0

I see Ballack is getting some slack for not reporting his injury until he returned from a 2 day break with his family.

This should be an easy win for Germany, althought I remember thinking the same before a certain Sengal - France match in the last world cup!

Germany will win.Even without Ballack they have quality players and the home advantage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭gracehopper

Ballack has declared himself fit for tonight

Is the game kicking off at 5 or that just the ceremony?. I dont get off work till 5:30

Cant believe the worldie cup is already here. Nothin else to do but get the beers in and enjoy the next 64 games

Germany should win tonight. Home advantage should land them a 2-1 win.

Germany should win easily- i'll go 3 -0 myself. Word on the street is Ecuador are not that bad and have caused a few upsets in Sth. America whilst qualifying, i myight take them to beat the poles,i ddint think they were anything special myself although we may hot a polish bar and hope the women get frisky, now where can we find a polish bar in Dublin!

    My god.

Anyway, yer all bastards, I can't watch much of this.

    1. In New Zealand they don't seem to know football exixts.
    2. It's on at three, four and five in the morning.
    3. I want to see some of this country, so I have to sleep at night.

But, I do land back in Dublin on the morning of the final.

Germany will beat Costa Rica though.

I wouldn't fancy Germany keeping a clean sheet against anyone at the minute. I'll go for 3-1. Poland to beat Ecuador 2-0.

Well it bothers me in the slightest :) I honestly believe Kerr could have got us far in the finals this year. Problem is he hadn't a clue about getting us there in the first place.

Can't wait for Kick-Off anyway. Hope there's lots of good footy, upsets and new stars to see.

    .

Kerr didnt fail to score 1 goal that would have us on the plane, the players did by being crap. He sent them out to score and win they decided otherwise. But thats a different thread :D

Well I guess we were watching different games then? On no less than 4 occasions I saw 'crap' Irish teams race to leads inside the first team minutes only then to turn into headless chickens straight after.
But thats a different thread :D
Agreed! I don't want to get in a bad mood so close to kick off :D

Thats what i love about it. You see some nobody become a star in the space of a month. Players like larsson, Hagi, Stoichkov & roger Milla.

    God i cant wait!!

Germay and Poland to both win. Germany to have a winning margin of about two goals and Poland to win by one. ;)

    Agreed.

Not having the stress of Ireland's possible/probable early exit means I get to enjoy this WC!

Am on my Summer leave from the 24th, not a chance of me leaving the country!

Don't the winners of the last World Cup traditionally open the new one. How come that has been changed?

Because the winners of the world cup now have to qualify and aren't guaranteed to be there.

Expecting a Germany win, a Poland win, and a drunken Joe Soap to get a chance to do his 'KC and The Sunshine Band' Grzegorz Rasiak chant.

Got the Huns down for a 2-0 win. Talk of Klinsman not selecting Ballack to make a point (and protect his second biggest asset).

I actually thought he looked on at first. Can't believe John Giles still thought he was offside after looking at the replay.

Fair play if ya can. I heard on the radio here he's 22-1 for top scorer, not a bad bet.

Beats listening to the "experts" at half time anyway.

John Giles still reckoned that the Costa Rican goal was offside, even after a replay showing he was clearly on. Then he expertly predicted a corner would be an outswinger (perhaps because the taker was standing five yards down the sideline waiting to take it).

Only worth watching for sheer comedy value.

His 'analysis' of Costa Rica before the kick off was priceless too.
