    Question 1 (b) Paper 2 Ordinary. 2004
    Ok I can't seem to be able to get this Simpsons Rule thing to work. Im following the instructions exactly, so can some one please tell me where Im going wrong. Im sure it is something simple.
    Here is the way I did the above question out:

    (odd)S1= 0 first
    (even)S2= 12
    (odd)S3= 11.4+10.6= 22
    (even)S4= 8.5+7= 15.5
    (odd)S5= 15.5+15.5= 31
    (even)S6= 16+9.9= 25.9
    (odd)S7= 9.2+13.4= 22.6
    (even)S8= 23.4+12.1 =35.5 last

    h=12m
    Odds=(0+22+31+22.6)= 75.6
    Evens=(12+15.5+25.9+35.5)= 88.9

    h/3[First+Last+2(odds)+4(evens)]

    12/3[0+35.5+2(75.6)+4(88.9)]

    12/3[35.5+2(75.6)+4(88.9)]

    12/3[35.5=151.2+355.6]

    12/3[542.3]

    =2169.2m squared

    BUT THE CORRECT ANSWER IS=1682.8m squared
    Am i suppoused to mulitply the top parts instead of add them? Thanks! :confused:

    k, its been a few years since i did this, but i seem to remember when you're doing the odds and evens you don't count the first or last (the ones you've already used) hope that helps.

    (so don't use 35.5 in the evens yoke)

    That post hurts my head.

    Strangely enough I did that exact question <I think> a few hours ago.

    Evens=(12+15.5+25.9)= 53.4

    h/3[First+Last+2(odds)+4(evens)]

    12/3[0+35.5+2(75.6)+4(53.4)]

    12/3[35.5+2(75.6)+4(53.4)]

    12/3[35.5=151.2+213.6]

    12/3[400.3]

    =1601.2m squared

    Ok so i did it again with out using the first and last in the odds/evens. And lo and behold, its wrong AGAIN! Help me!
    I must be doing something wrong?
    Are you suppoused to multiply intervals that separated?

    Aw, thanks so much.
    I knew I should have bought the more expensive past papers, with the codes! :rolleyes:

    Yeh, it's basically, as people said before, once you use a h#, you cross it off and don't use it again..

    And it's Area = w/3{first+last+4(even H#'s)+2(uneven H#'s)}

    Not h/3 (it'lls save confusion in the exam)

    i hate the way people try to explain maths on windows and pc's :mad:

    looks totally alien and makes everything even more complicated. someone should develop a maths programme that displays maths correctly i.e. fractions, formulas, square roots, squares etc...

    thank god i'll never have to do maths again after tomorrow:D (i mean stupid maths with letters and square roots and all that rubbish which nobody actually uses on planet earth)

    I wouldent say maths with numbers and letters(algerbra) and square roots and the like is useless. Most programming technniques and Electronics equiptment are based on the foundations of unknown variables and algerbra/computer logic/booleen algerbra to a lesser extent.
    No maths=no sophisticated equiptment.
    Even your broadband connection uses booleen algerbra to function;)
    Moral is maths is used by people on planet earth.
    (less of an extent with stuff like java)

    Also i understand maths is very formal and outdated in school in regards to everyday and practical meaning.

    maths is used by boring people. like germans for example. even in soccer theyve always been tactical and boring.

    maths isn't needed to the extent you think. you dont need a formula or a reason behind every single thing that is ever thought of or invented.

    it's common sense, not maths. maths is for precision items, things that must be done to perfection in order to work - i.e. computers.

    in every day life, common sense applies and is just as accurate as maths.

    10 yards in football - does a referee get out his measuring tape and measure? no, it's common sense. that will do. no point in wasting time being all precise and technical - that's boring.

    I agree with your stance on maths in everyday life but i was simply implying maths is used by a few specialised people who use maths which "normal" people
    dont use.

    My friends father for example as a publican can add subtract multiply and divide large figures in his head but yet he couldent give a toss about differential calculus as it serves no purpose to his career/interest

    I hate the way people are expected at ordinary level to learn stuff they probably wont use, Heck even most computing jobs require nothing more than binary addition,subtraction,multiplication and division.(cept games programmers)
