Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm looking to get some kind of software to compress media (AVI files)

I've tried Winzip and winrar but they only compress a file of 15 MB to a size of 14.8mb or something like that,, so theres no point in that really.

Does anyone know a good compression tool that will copress this file to about 8MB-10MB ?

This is just an example size. Files will be much bigger,

Most media files are already by their nature heavily compressed, so it's difficult to compress them any further.

I do remember this question being asked here before though, and there were a few useful answers.

afaik you won;t really be able to compress the file anymore unless you re-encode using lesser quality codec. or a codec that can all you to keep the quality but drop the file size.

For compressable files , http://www.7zip.org in solid mode just wipes winzip, and in most cases that's even if you include the bandwith the other person uses to download 7zip.

I've had to download trial versions of the latest winzip to open stuff sent in winzips latest and greatest format. Recompressed it in winzip and got a file just under half the size !!!

remember winzip isn't free - you must buy a license after the trial period
7zip - free + source code , main drawback is the interface and that support on non windows OS's is a bit limited.

For non-compressible files - nothing generic really works, unless it can re-process the file. And then you are moving away from lossless compression, you only get smaller files by ditching image or sound quality unless the new format is much better than the old one (gif vs. png)

For some formats like MP3 etc. the standard defines how to uncompress the file. It's then up to the programmers to work out the best way to compress it using any method they see fit and with whatever quality compromises they choose, so you would be looking at the sw you use to generate the AVI. Or look at other video formats or look at the resolution or colour depth (not for real life stuff) etc,
