There'll be no Barney at the World Matchplay in Blackpool this year after he was defeated by Andy Hamilton in the qualifiers. Hamilton went on to qualify himself, along with Barrie Bates, Alan Tabern and Steve Hine. The competition will be less good for Barney's absence but rules are rules.

Barney did go on to win the PDPA event on the Sunday beating Adrian Lewis in the final. The Saturday event was won by Colin Lloyd who beat Bates in the final.

Eurosport showed a couple of BDO events at the weekend. First up was an invitation challenge, in which Gary Anderson beat Gary Robson in the final (King and Adams defeated semi-finalists). On the Sunday Mike Veitch won the England Open - he beat Merv King in the semis and a youngish Engliah guy called Paul Gibbs in the final.

Barney Bounces Back With Sunday Best
RAYMOND van Barneveld claimed his second title in a week as he won the PDPA Players' Championship at Hayling Island on Sunday, following on from his Budweiser UK Open success seven days ago.

The Dutchman shrugged off the disappointment of failing to qualify for July's Stan James World Matchplay as he defeated top level opponents Peter Manley, Kevin Painter and John Part as well as Welshman Barrie Bates (for the third time in seven days!) on his way to the final.

He then defeated Adrian Lewis 2-0, 2-0, 1-2 and 2-0 in four sets in the final to claim the £5,000 first prize money and 20 ranking points.

Little known Stuart Dutton made his way to the semis, where he was defeated by van Barneveld, after having beaten Chris Mason and John Magowan in the latter stages.

The weekend's second perfect 9-dart finish was made by James Wade in his last 32 defeat to Alan Warriner-Little, but luck wasn't on Wade's side as it proved to be the only leg he took in the match.

Colin Lloyd's successful weekend continued as he followed up Saturday's win with a run to the semi finals, but despite having darts to knock Lewis out, it was the Stoke-thrower who came from behind to secure a final berth against van Barneveld.

Disappointed that Barney has failed to qualify for the World Matchplay because I think the tournament would have been alot better had he qualified. Its well known though that the qualifiers for these tournaments are very tough and sadly Barney just didnt have it.

Good to see Mick doing well in the last tournament.

Big loss for the tournament to not have Barney qualifying. Especially wth him having won the UK open, but the qualifiers are there for a reason and Barney simply wasnt good enough this time round.

I just read on skysports that both James Wade and Colin Osbouren both had nine dart finishes in this tournament and that it is the 2nd for each this year in tournament play..............they seem to be a lot more frequent this year and it proves that the standard is going to a new level which is amazing!
