I might change my level 8 first choice, but to what i don't have a clue. I could end up going with my level 7 though, it was AQA last year :D

I would have loved to have done Architecture, Construction Management or Engineering but I taught the points wer too much so I decided to go with something witch I taught I would be very good at Computer Science. Also I think there is a slow down in construction in a few years and companies r finding it hard to get ppl to fill qualified I.T jobs because ppl think that there is no demand for it.

What are you thinking of doing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭whassupp2

Considered Architecture for a while, then I.T (which i put first on CAO) but now i'm goin changing it to Civil Engineering.

Where are you thinking of doing C.E?

What I.T course did you have down and where?

Both in NUIG. The course is called IT

I'm not sure what to put 2nd Civ Eng in UCD or Sligo. Want to keep reasonably close to home. Where u doing comp science?

I'm not even sure of the order of my choices anymore. I think/hope I put History & English before Politics & Philosophy. The latter just sounds  at this stage. And then I went off on a mad tangent encompassing economics, law, international relations and God knows what else. I really should find that form.

    History & Politics no.1 ftw though :D

Im gonna have to change everything!

Yeah i have to change mine because I didnt get onto two art courses so I have to take them off, theres no point in having them there I guess and maybe throw on a few low pointer courses while im at it!! :D

I want to get as far away as possible but that might be unlikey becasue I messed up in two of my hons subjects so might end up in DKIT. Edinburgh, Maynooth & DIT are the main places I can do C.S

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 887 ✭✭✭Rockerette

    good ould DKIT :D

I do not know what the **** i wanna do......im finished today ill give it a real hard thought over the next week

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 958 ✭✭✭porn_star

i dont know what i wanna do
i was in the same situation as last year
    so i repeated
    pfft
    maybe arts
    or else radiography
it would be soooo much easier if someone assured me that i had the points
and then made up my mind

I don't know whether to put pharmacy or speech therapy second. anyone any ideas? I love sciences and I love people.

I had Theoretical Physics down but now I don't know if my self-esteem could manage such an intellectual course. *Sigh* down to General Science, I 'spose...

May change to Veterinary first instead of Medicine.. seriously confused at the moment, but leaning towards the former right now..

Im after throwing down Computer Science in DIT, just incase I didnt get my points! But I dont want to go to Dublin, but it beats staying at school another year ha ha.

Thats it, I dont want to look at that CAO website again until August 16th

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Naikon

Exiot when you say you have just "thrown down" computer science in DIT is that simply because it has low points?
Or are you actually interested in computers because i can tell you now that programming and scripting isnt everyones cup of tea and just remember "computers" in third level is quite different.
Sorry for sounding like an ass but i just assume you put it down over points allocation rather than interest.
I have a fair ida what to expect from the course as i have researched exactly what is involved.
EVEN if i get 550+ points i would still pick such a course because the points reflection doesent tell you if the course is good or bad in most cases.
Work experience will also stand to anybody who picks such courses.
Just pick a course you will enjoy for four years even if it involves getting through
a PLC course. Just my opinion.;)

I've got Comp Sci and Arts in UCD for my first choice. I have to say I didn't really research CS much yet, and I put down the Comp Sci/Arts combination because I don't want to only do CS. Does Computer Science involve a lot of hardcore coding and programming stuff, or is it more broad spectrum?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Naikon

You would cover other topics but CS basically boils down to information sytems which comprises heavily of programming.
The more applied courses might offer more but sadly Computer science is very heavy on programming as programming concepts underpin the theoretical basis of computing.
The more applied and practical course focus on system admin and hardware and less on pure programming.
To simply put it "computer science" is as it is the theory of software computation. Dont take my word for it and put you off but you will want to like programming for any computer science course.
My friend said choosing the right computing courses is essential they can range from the heavy programming stuffed ones or can be integrated into a design course with stuff like website design which is a little less programmming and more graphic design. Any computer course which aims to prepare people to become software developers or programmers is going to contain "hardcore programming".
UCD seems to cover hardware and software but apparently CS in trinity covers computers in so much detail its pretty much at the sub-atomic level.
UCD could be the same but i am NOT certain.
You could do well at programming but remember that you need to develop software skills as most stuff in honours maths isnt used in software design.
You will need a knack for analysing information and solving software problems.
Again you might really like computer science but this is my understanding of what it is like.
Your arts course might have less "hardcore programming in it however" cause it is a mix of both.
