Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Out tomorrow morning 10am.

How do you think they pick these? You never see a Man u V Liverpool at the start of the season or another major tie like that. I predict Chelsea V one of the promoted teams as a first game of the season anyway.

    No it's not.
It's decided by the FA, and they take great pains to talk with the Police, with UEFA, and with FIFA to ensure many many different conditions are met.
There is huge discretion(sp?) within the FA on fixtures.

What are you talking about! Liverpool played ManU on the opening day as recently as August 15th 1972! :)

    COMPILING THE FIXTURE LIST
The release of the 380-game fixture list for the 2006/07 Barclays Premiership season marks the end of a complex process involving several months of work for representatives of all the parties involved.

The Premier League work alongside the Football League, together with representatives of the Football Association, the Football Supporters' Federation and the Police to create a final schedule, which is acceptable to all.

The domestic football season runs from August through to May the following year, with the league fixture schedule having to take into account the requirements for international matches, European club competitions, the FA Cup and League Cup.

First priority in the calendar goes to international matches - such as World Cup and European Championship qualifiers - with European club competitions, the FA Cup and League Cup taking respective precedence on their selected dates.

Fixture questionnaires are also distributed to the 20 Barclays Premiership clubs on which they can make date requests and specify their preferred midweek day and kick-off time.

A variety of requests are made by clubs in the Premier League and Football League, with the compilers asked to meet - on average - over 100 date requests.

The success rate is almost 90 per cent for such requests, which range from pop concerts, carnivals and political party conferences to the Darlington Dog Show.

Given the amount of data to be handled, software developed by Atos Origin is then used to compile the full fixture list taking into account the agreed schedule and requests from clubs.

Each club across the league is also paired with another, and these clubs will not play home matches on the same day - for example Manchester United and Manchester City.

The Atos Origin software also ensures that any club who are away on the opening day of the season will be at home for their next match, and prevents clubs having a run of more than two home or away matches in sequence.

The fixtures for Boxing Day matches are hand-picked to ensure that as many fans as possible are able to see their team in action at a time when the availability of public transport is reduced.

Once the Atos Origin software has produced the fixture list, it is analysed by the fixture officers from the Premier League and Football League before being approved by representatives of the FA, FSF and Police.

The fixtures are then released to the public, with the selection of matches to appear live on BSkyB being made shortly after.

    .
Premiership champions Chelsea will kick off their title defence with the visit of Manchester City on 19 August.

Last season's runners-up Manchester United will host Fulham, while FA Cup winners Liverpool travel to newly-promoted Sheffield United.

Arsenal will open proceedings at the Emirates Stadium by taking on Aston Villa, while rivals Tottenham face a trip to Bolton.

New boys Watford take a trip to Everton while Reading will host Middlesbrough.

Intertoto Cup hopefuls Newcastle, minus the injured Michael Owen, begin their campaign at home to Wigan.

Portsmouth, who escaped relegation to the Championship last season, host Blackburn while Iain Dowie's first challenge as Charlton boss sees his side travel to FA Cup runners-up West Ham.

Manchester United have a tough opener to September which will go a long way to establishing whether they can capture their first Premiership title since 2003.

The Red Devils host Tottenham and Arsenal on 9 and 16 September.

Sir Alex Ferguson's boys will have to wait until 9 December for their contest against rivals Manchester City, while the first of the Merseyside derby fixtures will take place at Goodison Park on 9 September.

Chelsea face a tough run-in to their programme as they will travel to Arsenal in their penultimate fixture before hosting Everton in their final match.

Manchester United close with the visit of West Ham, while Liverpool will welcome Charlton to Anfield on 13 May.

And Reading chief Steve Coppell will ring in the new year with a trip to former club Manchester United when the two sides go head-to-head at Old Trafford on New Year's Eve.

    Man Utd:

    Start:

    Man Utd v Fulham
    Charlton v Man Utd
    Watford v Man Utd
    Man Utd v Tottenham
    Man Utd v Arsenal
    Reading v Man Utd
    Man Utd v Newcastle

TBH, I'm very unhappy with the start we got. I think it's quite tough, with 3 teams that could easily take points off us in Spurs, Arsenal and Newcastle. We do have three easy enough games to get us going, so let's hope we can win those 3 straight off and instantly keep up with Chelsea.

    December:

    Aston Villa v Man Utd
    Man Utd v Wigan
    Man Utd v Reading
    Newcastle v Man Utd

Quite a nice december run in, which I'm happy about, but we tend to do well in those games always so, I don't mind.

    March:

    Liverpool v Man Utd
    Man Utd v Bolton
    Man Utd v Blackburn

Vicious part of the season if we get to CL knockouts and the FA 1/4 and 1/2.

    End:

    Portsmouth v Man Utd
    Man Utd v Sheff Utd
    Chelsea v Man Utd
    Man Utd v Middlesbrough
    Everton v Man Utd
    Man City v Man Utd
    Man Utd v West Ham

It's not that difficult a run in, with only one really tough game, and three tough

We have a pretty annoying fixture schedale in the first half, with no long run of easy games, until the start of december, but that only goes to the mid of Jan.

    :(

    As for the other teams:

    Chelsea:

    Chelsea v Man City
    Middlesbrough v Chelsea
    Blackburn v Chelsea
    Chelsea v Charlton
    Chelsea v Liverpool
    Fulham v Chelsea

Chelsea have a bit of a dodgy start, with teams that normally take points off them in there.
Their December is also quite easy.

They do however have a very nice run of games in Feb/March, which could allow them to build momentum at the wrong time(in United terms)

However, their run in at the end is vicous, the worst of all the top 4, with
    Chelsea v Tottenham
    West Ham v Chelsea
    Chelsea v Man Utd
    Newcastle v Chelsea
    Chelsea v Bolton
    Arsenal v Chelsea
    Chelsea v Everton

Basically, the top 8 teams, sans Liverpool.
    So that's good.

    Arsenal:

They have an easy first three, against teams who can't stop their football. Then United, but then 5 more games that are going to allow them to play football.

THen they have it tough all through November and December, until Christmas.

Tough Feb, but then an easy March, cept the end of it.

Then they have quite a tough run in, almost as bad as Chelsea's.

    Liverpool:

They have a toughish August but a very very tough September and October(well the first two). This is definally the worst of the openings for all the top teams.

But in turn, they get a very very very nice run of easish teams, from after Nov 11 until 26th of December. Then it gets tough again until Feburary.

Their march is very harsh, but they have the nicest finish of all the teams.

    Overall,

I think United's start is quite tough, but so is Chelsea's. I think we have the fixtures organised in such a way that we can keep up with them until December. I woulda liked a really easy start to maybe try get ahead of them, but I think we could see Arsenal out in front by November, but with United and Chelsea and Liverpool catching up to them in December.

After that, it's anybody's game. I'm annoyed Chelsea have such a tough run in at the end, I woulda rathered they got that at the start of the 2nd half. They could well break away, and the rest of the teams be playing catch up, which isn't the way I wanted it to happen :/

If Liverpool are in the hunt after the new year programme they'll win the league!
