Eurostat is the Statistical arm of the EU. It did a survey on computer literacy.

This found that 37% of EU Citizens have no basic computer skills at all.

It also found that in high performing countries the figure is under 20%

Noel simply would not let us take part :D

Now it may have been that Micheal Martin or Mary Hanafin helped squash this survey too but as Noel is Mr 'ICT In Action' I'd rather blame him.

A more comprehensive breakdown may be found here in which there are assumptions for Ireland in certain cases (data source unknown given the lack of co-operation by Noel ) . That makes us out to be as crap as Poland but Latvia is now creeping ahead of us and even the Czechs are getting awful close :( , see page 2 of the survey here )

Nevertheless we are above average in use of IT systems at work (11 of 25) so the gap MUST be in the home .....stranded at the end of eircoms cruddy copper in other words .

Can we all please have "functional internet access" in the home Noel, as required by the 2002 USO directive. From that good things may follow but as things are we have no incentive to use ICT in Ireland unless the boss tells us to.

I know you have kept us ahead of Greece on your watch but keep an eye on them east european fellas willya, good lad.
