A while back we were welcoming member number 70000. But today I notice the members list saying there were only 56640 members?

Was there an ethnic cleanse of the database of dormant accounts?

Strange, the members list at the bottom of this link says we have 69.184 members.

The post I made some time ago was relating to members from the member id. We are currently at member id 74072.

This page is where I'm getting my figure from.

Where is the difference between the two? Banned users?

I would assume that the memberlist.php does not include banned members.

The index.php will show the number of users in the database.

User ID grows anyway even after a user has been deleted or merged from the database.
    example
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/member.php?u=2

This also applies to both threads and posts.

So think of the number 74089 as the number of registrations to boards.

There are some vacant numbers near the start where gaps were left or accounts were hard deleted (as opposed to just banned).
