I am driving from Dublin to Dakkar later on in the year as part of a challange. One of the constraints is the car must be Left Hand Drive and worth 500 euro or less - anyone have any ideas as to where I could source a car in Ireland. Bringing in from abroad could be quite a hassle due to VRT etc.

    Thanks

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    From the buy and sell:

    Mercedes 190 E 1984, Munster Tipperary €200.00
    LHD, 087-6481758

Honda Civic 1.6L 1990, Leinster Co. Dublin €350.00
lhd, duty paid, taxed 2 mths, everyday use, 087-9637026

Good luck with your challenge :D

Why would you pay VRT? How long is it going to be driving on Irish roads for?

It would still have to be insured, so t'd have to be registered.

With all the Eastern Europeans here bringing cars with them, there must be hundreds. The Civic sounds good for that kind of challenge though.

Apparently the Lada Niva is a favourite for this kind of expedition.

In relation to Eastern Europeans. If anyone is going to buy one of those cars should remember that 99.9% cars are not custom cleared. If you are a resident of ROI for more than 6 months you can not drive such a car before visiting relevant Revenue Office with the cheque.

Lada Niva is a really good choice. It's simple and reliable. Years ago Niva took 1st position in off-road vehicles top-sellers in France. But honestly I've never seen those in any irish papers or in russian paper Nasha Gazeta.
