'95 Nissan Almera hatch - bought in '00. Ugly, boring but great handling. Way better to drive than Escorts/Corollas of that era.

'01 Avensis Aura - got a good deal on an ex-lease car, good spec. Hated it though, bland, old mans car, woeful handling.

'04 Mazda 6 Sports Tourer - it's an Alfa 156 substitute in a way. ..Good loking/sporty-ish saloon without the tears. Love it actually, can't think what I'd replace it with. Lexus IS200 /Audi A4 / next Mazda 6 maybe (?)

The guy I bought that car from told me a great story about taking his mother for a spin the day he bought it. A very elegant lady by all accounts, she (very discreetly) got sick in her handbag..

Kersh, How did you find the GTO overall? I was considering looking into one.

In the 2 years I owned it the Autobox lunched itself , 2 grand to fix, then the timing belt snapped, bent 20 of the 24 valves, repaired and rebuilt engine myself, 900 eu.
Buy a Twin turbo, with a 6 speed getrag manual box, not the 5 speed mitsi manual box, and either way, make sure the input shaft is an aftermarket hardened steel Kormex one. Should be trouble free. All twin turbos are manuals.

99 1L Corsa B in '00 - I really like my corsa when I had it. I got the bodykit and big alloy wheels thing out of my system with that car. Was sorry to see it go in the end but I could not live any longer with the worst engine known to man.

99 1.4 Golf in '04 - I had always liked Golfs, so at the time of getting shut of the corsa decided to get one. The car was absolutely spotless inside and out but had a fondness for the 10w/40 if you know what I mean. I have heard from a number of people that this is common with the 1.4s

98 1.8T Sport A3 in '06 - Bought the A3 about 3-4 months ago. One owner from new, completly standard and very well looked after. I love driving the car but it is heavy enough on the juice. Still id rather get 25-30mpg and enjoy the drive then get 45-50mpg in a car i cant wait to get out of.

Currently a Mazda 323f 1.5l (1996)

Opel Corsa 1.2l (1992)
The engine blew up about a week after I "fixed" a fuel line leak into the engine.
A big bang and a slow fire then gutted the front half of the car after 20 mins.

Anyone still driving those old Corsa's should get the rubber hoses checked.
Mine perished, so the hoses were brittle rather than flexible.

Word to the wise, from experience (my 1.4 TZS 3-doors was same all-round, minus the GT badge) - watch out for understeer on the wet.

And get ready for skimming that engine if you regularly push it - head gasket can be a 'mare because engine bay is too small for the 1.4 to breathe.

That said - enjoy in no moderation at all

Thanks for that. My typical cure for the understeer is left foot braking, or a touch of the handbrake for serious understeer.

But, I typcally set the car up before the corner and unsettle the back end so that the back steps out in the corner. Result - a touch of oversteer and then plenty of gas to pull to car straight!

For the cooling, I was thinking of removing the grill, opening the holes in the bumper, removing the plastic trim at the bottom of the windscreen and raising the bonnet at the windscreen.

For jaysus sake, Fernando Alonso would be using all his skills doing all that!

Always nervous of left-foot braking on the roads. I can do it in a kart all where the driving position makes it easier to co-ordinate both feet (and crashing doesn't have the same consequences).

BTW, some F1 drivers such as Barrichello aren't too hot on left foot braking but I doubt an F1 car has any similarity with road-car techniques...

Driving an AT now, started to "experiment" with LFB some weeks ago iin traffic, have the hang of it now. Its very handy, after a while it should be every bit as natural.

All of my experiments with left foot braking, using the handbrake and unsettling the car before the corner to stop understeer have been done on private roads, and gravel tracks.

I am not going to do them tricks on the public road, as having the arse of the car sideways as Mrs Murphy comes the other way can be scary!

Left foot braking is mainly used by rally drivers. To see it in action, get the video of Walter Rohl driving the S1 Audi Quattro and watch the feet!
