Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Defending in the World Cup

Despite the fact that I'm really enjoying this World Cup, it has been notable that many of the world's great attacking players have failed to shine. Ronaldinho, Toni, Henry, Adriano and Gilardinho among many others have been below par. There haven't been that many killer through balls, nor have there been many (any?) long dribbles resulting in goals. At the same time, there have been loads of unbelievable goals from long range, and some really quick, crisp passing goals that are indefensible.

Would it be fair to conclude from this that the defending in this World Cup has been genuinely top class? I mean, there are so many central defenders that are having/have had a great tournament in contrast to other positions. Cannavaro, Marquez, Senderos, Ayala, Ferdinand (!), Gallas, Luque... to name but a few.

    Agree/disagree?

As with the last WC, seasons in Europe and European competitions are too long and with too many games. All the top players are too tired by the time the tournament comes around.

Tactical defence shutouts. You got to do so much work to get close to goal against a well drilled team.

    Mike.

Top level football is far too defensive these days, its all about not conceding.
