I'm bringing in a car from the UK in the next week and I've noticed when playing around with the online VRT calculator that the mileage on the car can affect how much you will payin VRT.

Now this is all hypothetical, but say someone was to bring in a car from the UK then get the mileage adjusted UPWARDS by one of those guys who advertise in Buy & Sell then present it for VRT assesment and then once it was paid etc go back to a mileage correction specialist and have it set back to the original mileage. Technically this is all within the law is it not ?

Does the V5 cert or any of the UK documents you have to bring in to pay your VRT have mileage details on it ?

Nope. You can do this if you wish, but the VRT guys are not stupid.

Thats a great idea, thats why the boys in the VRO give a mileage allowance for petrol cars and deisel cars.

If your has 60kmiles and you clock in to 500k miles the revenue only give you an allowance for up to say 70k miles on your car.

Check out the VRO handbook available on revenue.ie

I think the rates are something like 350 miles per week for petrol and 500 miles per week for diesel. Not sure on that but the rates are in the handbook.

exactly, why would you bother going all the way to UK to import a car with a bazillion miles on it?

THe give an allowance of 900 miles per month for a petrol or 1300 per month for a diesel but according to section 1.4.5.7 of the VRT guide where the mileage exceeds this allowance then the examiner has the right to reduce the VRT liability and conversely where the mileage goes under the allowance then they can levy an additional charge!

So bringing in a 5 year old petrol car, the VRT would expect it to have 54k on the clock. If you were bringing in a car that you knew to have 36k odd legimite miles then according to their own guidelines they can charge you extra, penalising you for low mileage.

Well I brought in a 5 year old car with only 6,600 miles on the clock and it didn't affect the quote for me. So it's probably there in case they wish to exercise the levy but probably don't (well didn't in my case)
