I've been looking about for a small, fast car. Will have to commute Ennis to Limerick each morning as of September so i'll be needing to change the '96 1.4 Escort LX.
I'll be heading over to London at the end of the month to pick it up. My brother is living over there, so could possibly get him to view it.

Basically, it just has to be under 1.6l. I have about €3000 (£2300ish?) to spend (before VRT).

So far, I've been thinking of:

    Peugeot 106 GTi or XSi
    Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.3 or 1.6
    Citroen Saxo VTS
    BMW 316
    Ford Escort Si
    Hyundai Coupe
    Pre-1990 Mazda 323 GT Turbo 4WD
Pre-1995 Mazda 323F 1.6 (we have one in the house, seriously fun cars - if I found one in good condition, i'd pay any money.)
Mark I or Mark II VW Golf
    VW Scirroco

Possibly a Mini aswell, though I'm unsure.

Any recommendations as to which car? Anything to look out for when looking at any of the above cars?

Also, would it be advisable to go over with cash, walk into a dealer and say, for example, "I'll give you £2k cash for that. I won't be back to you ever again..."?. Would they be up for that (would they make a few bob for themselves by selling cars this way?)?.

Ennis to Limerick is great road so you should get away with a cheap car in the price range you've mentioned.

Dealers will have no problem with you going into them and forgoing the warranty but say it after you have decided on a car and driven it. He'll more than likely give you something a little less "impressive" if you tell him you ain't gonna be back :) They'll probably be flexible on the asking price if you don't want the warranty too..

A lot of dealers won't sell trade cars to the public.
