Opposition preparing for Dail assault on govt parties

The opposition is preparing to launch its latest assault on the Government tonight when the Dail begins debating a motion calling for an early general election.
The motion, which has been tabled by Fine Gael the Labour Party, comes hot on the hells of an opinion poll showing a drop in support for the coalition.

It also follows the furore over the Government's handling of the Supreme Court ruling on underage sex, as well as infighting within both Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats.

The motion being debated tonight criticises the Government's performance in 13 key areas including crime, health and education and says an early election should be arranged as soon as possible.

The Taoiseach, however, has ridiculed the idea, saying yesterday that the opposition would have heart failure if he actually did call an early ballot.

"It just shows the game of the opposition," he said. "They put forward no constructive suggestions, have no proposals about anything and just attack anything that comes into their head."
