We're reading 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love' by Raymond Carver for the next meeting - Wednesday 15th December at 8pm.

As it's the last meeting before Christmas we'll be having our annual meal/p!ss up. We might even get to talk about the book at some stage, not guaranteed though.

As usual, all newcomers are very welcome. We're meeting in The Exchequer Gastropub at 8pm. Please PM me if you're attending as I need to book a table.

    Hope to see you there

Hello there, I just found this thread, looking for bookclub to join in Dublin. Just wondering if the group is all twenty-somethings as per an early post on this thread? I am a forty-something, not being ageist but I would feel braver about joining if there was a mix!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭cailinoBAC

Hey, I haven't been to the book club since March because I've left the country, but there was a mix of age groups, depending on the week that was in it. 20s to 40s I would say, but definitely no limit! New members are always welcome. You should go along to the Christmas event. I've been to all of the other ones and they've always been good. Also there usually tend to be one or two new people at the Christmas do as well, so it wouldn't be strange.

    Hi there,

I went to a few meetings and I would definitely be in the older age group, so please do feel free to join! That idea of a meal at Christmas time sounds good.

Thanks for the replies, I'd love to join the group. Don't know yet if I can make the Wed 15th Dec, my work hours are irregular, but I'll keep an eye on this thread for what you're reading and come to the next date I am free. Thanks again, looking forward to meeting other booklovers!

    Hi All,
We've had to change the booking to The Chatham Brasserie at short notice. It's still on Wednesday at 8 o'clock.
Everybody is welcome. I'll ensure that the staff at the restaurant know where the book club is located. Otherwise, feel free to pm for contact details.

Hey! I've just realised I won't be around for the next meeting. Going down to Limerick to see the Dalai Lama so I'll miss it. I think it's Declan who said he would bring in 'The Finkler Question' for me at the meeting. If you would be willing to hold onto it for another month I'd gladly take it then but I completely understand if it is taking up space and you want to get rid of it before that. Hope you have a enjoyable night.

    Hi there,

In response to your post, which outlines that new members are welcome. Could you let me know the approx. number of people that usually turn up; what are the members like; what type of book do you usually read?

    Sorry for all the questions...
    K

The number of people varies a bit. Last time we had seven the time before five. Four or five is probably a good average if I had to guess.

There's a good mix of people in our group. Most of us are in our 20s or 30s if that's what you're getting at? But again there's a good mix.

Here's a list of books we've read in the past excluding the most recent ones which you can find by looking back through this thread:

The Weight of Numbers - Simon Ings
Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
...The Plot Against America - Philip Roth
    Sputnik Sweetheart - Haruki Murakami
The Reluctant Fundamentalist - Moshin Hamid
God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater - Kurt Vonnegut
A Heart so White - Javier Marias
    The Sea - John Banville
Out Stealing Horses - Per Petterson
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Ernest Hemingway
A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess
The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco
The Periodic Table - Primo Levi
The Third Policeman - Flann O'Brien
Vernon God Little - DBC Pierre
Mikhail Lermontov - A Hero of our Time
    Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
Arthur & George - Julian Barnes
    Daphne Du Maurier - Rebecca
A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
    A Grief Observed by C S Lewis
    The Castle - Kafka
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
The Sea, The Sea - Irish Murdoch
    The Fall - Albert Camus
...One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert Pirsig
The Irish Saved Civilisation - Thomas Cahill
The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language - John McWhorter
The Portrait of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
    The Road - Cormac McCarthy
    We - Yevgeny Zamyatin
Man's Search for Meaning - Victor Frankl
The Audacity Of Hope - Barack Obama
    Dracula - Bram Stoker
The Tipping Point - Malcolm Gladwell
    The Dead - James Joyce
    But Beautiful - Geoff Dyer
The Post Office Girl - Stefan Zweig
The White Tiger - Aravind Adiga
    Franny and Zoey - J D Salinger

    Hope that helps.

Wow, thanks for going to all that effort & typing all that out!!!

Yeah, I'm in my mid-thirties myself.

Do you usually advertise the date & place on this forum?

    Thanks again Earthhorse!

Ah, I cheated a little and copied and pasted a list someone else had done up previously.

Yeah, this thread should always be updated with details of any meetings. There's an e-mail list too, which I can add you too if you Private Message your address.

I'm quite tempted to get onboard with this. I just started a new job in Dublin and as it happens many of my old friends from Dublin are anywhere but Dublin these days. Need to do something during the week (Not the weekend as much, have plenty of things to do) and I've always wanted to join a reading club. The standard of books seems to be above average, which is encouraging. If someone could send me a PM with some details it would be great.

    It's a monthly-ish meeting? Is that typical?

I'm always threatening to join a book club, but I assumed it'd be a fortnightly rather than monthly meet up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭cailinoBAC

Think it's every 3 weeks usually, or maybe longer if it's a long book or depending on what people are up to. I haven't been in over a year because I'm living abroad, but I think every two weeks would be a bit much.

Don't forget that we also have the Book Crossing meet up which has a Book of the Month. Details are on the Book Crossing thread.

We usually have the BC meeting on a different night so as not to clash with this reading club. So if you want to, you could attend both!
