PS3 info from leaked Sony document

An internal Sony Q+A style document from E3 2006 has been leaked onto the web. A lot of it is info we already knew about (but better communicated in many cases), but there's some bits of information that seem new and that are nicely clarified.

In short, PS3 continues to look more and more like a modern Amiga :)

The new info, as far as I can tell is:

    - PS3 allows you to connect standard USB adaptors, including for wifi, adaptors for extra ports, and USB card readers (if you want to read memory sticks etc. on the 20GB model). The document goes on and on about PS3 being a computer, and that connecting industry standard USB devices is one part of that.

    - All PS3 games will be region free. (To quote it directly "all PLAYSTATION 3 games will be region free and will therefore play on any PLAYSTATION 3 regardless of where it was bought." We'll see. They didn't see so sure about that before E3).

    - PS3 supports BD Live. The description given:
The PS3 will be one of the first BD players on the market with full "BD Live" capability (the ability to access the internet from within the disc and download additional content to the player's internal memory - as well as the ability to enjoy unique, "web-enabled" interactive features, such as bringing up web sites, actor information and bios and related topics in windows (picture in picture) whilst continuing to play the main movie.

    - It looks like PS3 may support the DLNA standard, for exchanging media between devices seamlessly:
Q21. There were 2 HDMI ports in your original announcement, but why does the 60GB PS3 have only 1 HDMI port ?
A21. Because standardization of image output over the network such as DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is currently under way, it will become possible to transfer images to multiple displays in ways other than using the HDMI port. It is also possible to connect PSP through the network as a secondary display and enjoy PS3 content remotely (although it depends on the software).

    - PS3's noise output level is 29 decibels, making it as quiet as a slim PS2

Also confirms much else that we already know, like Linux coming with PS3, upconversion of SD content (PS1/PS2/DVD) to HD etc. All wrapped up in a very soundbite-ish facade, but then it would be, being an internal document. You can read the whole thing here:

before e3 the worry was more about copy protection, the region free thing is concrete now, at least with the games anyway.

    How reliable is that source?

The noise output seems too good to be true. Nothing else in it is too surprising though really.

They had mentioned at E3 in interviews that it was as quiet as a slim PS2, but they didn't give out decibel ratings. Of course, I guess you could say we don't know how that is measured - is that the loudest it gets? It seems to make sense, though..for example, the nosiest component by far in a 360 is the DVD drive, but the Blu-ray drive in PS3 will spin much slower and so should make a lot less noise (A 2x Bluray drive rotates as slowly as a 2.5x DVD drive).

I'm still a bit sceptical about the region free. At GDC they weren't so sure that all games would be region free - they would only say for sure that their own first party games would be.
