cmyip.com probably consults the RIPE (european agency responsible for delgation of IPs) info for your IP block, which is publically accessible.

It can be a bit of a balls for online gaming. I am with utv and get better pings on UK servers than on Irish servers. If I do a traceroute to an irish server the packets go all the way to the uk and then back to ireland again

I find www.dnsstuff.com good for this kind of stuff - the "WHOIS lookup" will look up your IP address with RIPE records.

That cmyip.com site doesn't work for me:

God knows how it got my LAN address! O_o
