Its basically made for CAD and other graphic programs similar to the nVidia Quadro series. Not sure how it would perform in games but I dont think it worked too well. €3000 for crossfire is a bit steep

It's NOT made for games, end of story. Its designed for high end design, CAD and workstation use basically.

What do you think those E3 demos run on?

The ones where the game looks simply stunning then you get it and ....eh.... umm it doesnt look that way.

Of course they run games but thats not what they made for.

Wouldn't it be cheaper for dev's to run their E3 demos off 7900GTX SLi/ X1900XTX CF rigs?

Sure no-one will be complaining of the noise :p

I think games wise they're the equiv of a X1800xt... Was an article in custom pc about it and why they're not used for gaming.. Their design is based on allot of industry std programmes n they've got rock solid stability.... or so they say
was workin on a drawing last week that was 17gigs.

Must have been the plans for the new death star :p

Aye, its not that they're not able to run the games, its just that they're not specifically designed for them per say. :)

They are *guaranteed* to work with various ISVs' applications.
It's largely to cream a bit of money from business customers (where the cost of such a card for such guarantees and stability is neglible) and to pay for the extra engineer time on the drivers.
It's the same hardware, and they use the same core drivers, although the VendorID and PCIID detected by the driver enable/disable certain features - along with small hardware settings (L2 bridges on AthlonXPs for MP mod being an example).

Well yea and no, they says it Gameplay footage but really its a video/demo running on one of the above beasts with hyper street fighter dual core CPUs.

ID were busted doing it for Doom 3 few years ago said it was a Nvidia 6800 prototype but it was one of those beasts running the "fat dude walking about" demo.

Lesson never trust demos @ e3 prey is one of those looked awesome at e3 looks okish on my pc.

They work fine on games but obviously given the price there'd be zero point getting one for pure gaming, only if maybe you needed a really good work station and games machine combined.

The Quadro cards anyway - I've never had any experience with the Ati ones - are brilliant for OpenGL based games seeing as thats what their geared for, but a bit slower in Dx based games. Still fine, but slower then their gaming optimised eqivilents which are hundreds of euro cheaper.

That would be why they would be so good at games Like Doom 3, Quake IV, Prey, etc...

mate of mine tried running 3dmark on a Quadro card and it preformed really bad, was supposed to be eqivalent to a 6800 but preformed way worse
