Lobby group for motorists?

The Donegal protest against VRT got me thinking:

Why in the bejaysus are there no "lobby groups" for motorists?

Lord knows there's enough of us genuine enthusiasts about, and we have a list as long as yer arm in terms of "regular complaints":

    Conditions of the roads
    Cost of insurance
    Test waiting times
Speeding (whether inappropriate speed limits or not enough detection)
General lack of enforcement of driving laws
The shambles of the Gardai not being able to do random drink-drive checks
Foreign regged/insured/taxed cars driven by Irish residents (not a xenophobic rant, I pay tax & insurance here, so can the rest of the irish road users)

2 million drivers is a lot of votes. 400K waiting on tests alone is a lot of votes.

Are we just doing the irish thing of letting the politicians give us the speil on the doorstep come election time, and just giving out more after the election when they fail to do anything?

    M.

    I agree totally!
It's high time we had a motorist's organisation to lobby on issues mentioned above!

The newly-established 'Irish Drivers Association' (featured recently on RTE News protesting in Donegal, against VRT) could be the basis of a strong countrywide organisation to lobby on our behalf?!
