    From the NTSA website:
    49th ISSF World Shooting Championships.
    Contributed by Patrick O'Brien
    Wednesday, 19 July 2006

The 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships which takes place every four years, will take place this year in Zagreb, Croatia from 20th July until 5th August 2006.

Representing Ireland in the Rifle events at this major international championship will be a team of 8.

Leslie Fagan, competing in the Men’s 50m prone.
Damien Fagan, competing in the Junior Men’s Air rifle.
Elizabeth O’Hagan, Susan Cunningham, Paula Cunningham, will compete in the Junior Women’s Air rifle.

    They will be accompanied by
    Patrick O'Brien, Head of Delegation.
    Marie Fagan, Team Official.
    Barry Dagger, Team Coach.

The NTSA wish the Team a successful journey and successful competition.

To keep up to date on the competition and results you can visit the Official Championships Web site, Here

The air rifle shooters will be training on Saturday from 0900 to 1430, and Leslie from 1400 to 2200 on Saturday; the events are then all on on Tuesday afternoon from 1300 to 1815 for the air rifle and the elimination in 50m is on all tuesday; if Leslie makes it through, the match proper is on Wednesday morning.

    From Wilkinstown:
The Irish team taking part in the World Championships in Zagreb next week is fully drawn from WTSC. The team comprises Leslie Fagan (50m prone Senior) and Paula, Susan, Damien and Elizabeth who are all shooting junior 10 air rifle.

This selection indicates the strength of our club and also proves if proof be needed that training is necessary. WE need to get more shooters training in the air guns and also in .22 rifle so that we can build up a very capable group of motivated shooters who can take their place on National squads and bring home the bacon!

    We wish our shooters well

The team going over to represent Ireland:

Scores are in from the first few match (and the qualifying rounds for a few other matches), though none of our shooters have shot yet.

Other results are coming up here as we speak, and you also can watch the shots hitting the targets live. For example, Mike Gault's rather odd fourth string (something must have gone wrong on shot 31, this is way below his normal form):

Scarily high scores to get in there - remember, the usual winning score in Irish Nationals is around 580. Here, that gets you 92nd place, way back on page three of the scores sheets! :D

    From ISSF:

The third time is a charm
For the 23-year-old Abhinav Bindra, of India, this third time was a charm. In what was his third try at the title, Bindra was able to walk away the World Champion in men’s air rifle today. Alin George Moldoveanu, of Romania, came in second, while China’s Qinan Zhu took third.

Our rifle shooters are up tomorrow, while the shotgun shooters (Barry Lynch, Thomas Allen and Derek Burnett) will be training; if Leslie makes it through the elimination round in 50m prone, he'll be in the actual qualifiers on Wednesday morning, while the shotgun team is competing over Wednesday and Thursday. Remember, the Irish Trap team brought home the Team Gold medal from the 2002 world championships, so everyone's going to be looking to them for a strong performance in nearly 40 degree heat!

Some results from the Junior's competitions so far. Interesting to see how they compare with the Senior scores on the international stage, since we're so used to Junior's kicking Senior's behinds in Ireland: the 580 that won the 10m Junior Men's Air Pistol event, for example, wouldn't even have made it into the Finals in the Senior event.

Not to forget, our rifle shooters are shooting today:
    10m Junior Men's Air Rifle (1200 - 1345)
    10m Junior Women's Air Rifle (1415-1530 and 1600-1715)
50m Men's Prone Rifle (1100-1545 - there are three details, I'm not sure which one Leslie's on but I think it's the first).

You can watch the scores as the shots hit the targets (literally) here.

    Fingers crossed!

I've listed the GB juniors there as well for comparison. Not a great shoot for Damien - he's capable of a good bit better than that - but for 30 degree heat and 66% humidity, that's not so bad. It's over the minimum qualifying score for the olympics (570) so that'd be a junior carding grant for him if he hadn't already qualified for one earlier this year. But it's lower than 50th place, so the next grant level up isn't going to happen this time.

    Elizabeth's shooting now...
    So far a 95, 91.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

And that's Elizabeth's match finished. Not a great score for her, again she's got a lot more potential, but with the pressure, the heat and the humidity, it's not a bad performance for her first time out at a big match.

    95 91 87 90 363

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

    So,
    Leslie's match: 95 96 99 94 96 94 574
    Damien's match: 97 96 92 97 95 95 572 MQS
    Susan's match: 93 95 92 97 377 MQS
    Paula's match: 92 93 91 92 368
    Elizabeth's match: 95 91 87 90 363.

Two MQS scores, meaning carding grants for next year, and one point off a PB for Paula (in her first big international match!). Not a bad result. Tomorrow sees the first day of shooting for the shotgun shooters, to be concluded on Thursday.

Again, I've listed the GB juniors there as well for comparison. Well under par for Susan and Elizabeth, but that's one point off Paula's PB, no mean feat in such a stressful environment. The 21* beside Melanie's score is the number of tens she shot, used to break between her score and another shooter's score who shot not only her identical end score, but also identical scores in every string.

    From the ICSPA:
Derek Burnett is leading the field after day one at the ISSF World Championships
currently taking place in Croatia in the Olympic Trap event having shot a sensational 75 straight to give himself a one target lead. Barry Lynch shot a 70 and the third member of the team Tom Allen shot a 68. These scores leave the team in joint fourth place overall and a mere five targets behind the leaders and it is still all to play for as they enter the second and final day of the competition. We wish them all well and the final results will be posted as they become available. (Posted 26/07/06)

Word in from Zagreb - Derek didn't make the finals, but he did place high enough to win a quota place for Ireland for the Bejing Olympics!

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

    From the ICPSA:
After two days of intense competition at the very highest level, Derek Burnett heartbreakingly missed out on a place in the finals at the ISSF World Championships following a sudden death shoot off having originally tied for joint fourth place with three other competitors. There was more than ample compensation however when the Sydney and Athens veteran secured a precious quota place for the Beijing Olympics and the Association congratulates and commends Derek on this outstanding individual achievement.

Fellow team member and past Olympian Tom Allen eventually finished in 60th place with a score of 113 and Barry Lynch scored 111 to finish in 77th position but the team slipped from 4th place after day one to finish in 14th place from a field of 33 entries.

Special mention must again go to Kevin Kilty who in his role as High Performance Director has not only steered the programme to this well deserved success but has also managed to gather around him a support team second to none which has in no small way contributed to Derek and the rest of the squad members achievements at these Championships and recent World Cup events.

The Irish Sports Councils continued invaluable support and belief in our sport and its participants has also to be acknowledged and applauded and now that the first hurdle has been cleared with regard to Olympic qualification for at least one competitor the programme can look forward with renewed enthusiasm to the European Championships in six weeks time and the hoped for further progression of more Irish shooters. Full results will be posted when they become available.

From the Olympic Council of Ireland:
[27-07-2006] Olympic Shooting Place for Ireland

Subject to confirmation, Derek Burnett has secured a place for Ireland in shooting at the forthcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Derek finished in 7th place in the trap event at the 49th Shooting World Championships currently being held in Zagreb, Croatia. His score of 121 was just 2 points behind the Gold medalist, Sandhu of Indonesia.

More details of this exciting development will be posted when they come to hand.
