LCD TV Backlighting

A mate was talking about using mood lighting , maybe LED strips in white behind the TV, to bring out the blacks on the LCD TV. Is this common practice and if it is what can I buy to do this ?

Philips do it , its called Ambilight , its on most of their LCD TVs and its a tad expensive.

Ive heard a cheaper way is to have small table lamps near the TV to add to mood lighting.

The philips Ambilight changes with the tv colour aswell.
