The first phase of the construction project that will bring full broadband facilities to the county's major towns has started, according to Meath County Council's Director of Services for Infrastructure Eugene Cummins. This follows the recent award of a contract worth over €7million to GMC Contracting by Meath County Council for the installation of fibre optic cable rings around five Meath towns: Navan, Kells, Trim, Dunshaughlin and Dunboyne/Clonee. Plans to award a contract for Installation of broadband rings in a further tranche of Meath towns are close to finalisation.

The County Council initiative is designed to boost Meath's attractiveness for economic investment in the county by extending the fibre optic cable network to embrace key towns in Meath. The initiative will also incorporate the installation of wireless systems in a number of locations.

" Broadband is a key piece of modern infrastructure, and is a essential enabler of economic development" Eugene Cummins said. "Under this phase of the project, we will install almost 50 kilometres of fibre optic cable over the coming 12 months. In doing so Meath County Council will be creating a modern and effective communications network for businesses and residents in Meath which can be continuously expanded into the future"

After the construction phase is completed next year, the MAN rings will then be commissioned and opened up for service. Once the networks go "live", this will create an opportunity for telecommunications providers to offer services to individual companies and users located along the route of the fibre optic cable line. " As well as extending high capacity broadband to a large proportion of our business and high-end residential users, the MAN project should also lead to more competitive pricing for broadband services in Meath as more suppliers will be able to access the telecommunications market in our towns" said Eugene Cummins.

The investment is 90% funded by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources under their Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) scheme. Industria Networks Ltd have been awarded the contract for the design and management of the Meath MAN scheme.

The contract is expected to be completed by Summer next year. The County Council have agreed a works schedule with the contractor that will minimise traffic disruption in the towns concerned. A website will be launched shortly showing details of the MAN routes in each town as well as providing up-to-date information on the progress of the contract. Information on the project will be communicated to the business community in each town over the coming weeks in conjunction with the business chambers.

Are they just announcing the installation of the MAN and claiming it to be their own initiative? Or is there more to it?

I suppose if the Council is forking out €700k for the project they are entitled to issue a press release.
Whilst the Govt. have made the funding available, the Council's themselves have a lot of work to do to get their hands on it.
