Green van was out this morning on the naas road, the city side of the redcow before woodies. 60kph zone, heavy traffic....whats the point of that?

I saw that, think I might have got zapped as well

Does anyone know how quickly they can focus on another vehicle after nailing the first one ?

I was following in traffic, all travelling at 70 (in a 60 area).
How many of those vehicles could realistically have been nabbed ?

Can anyone give me a link to where I can get info such as this..

    Cheers.

They are there a lot - esp at weekends

another place is just on the Naas side of Newlands - on the left hand side going towards Dublin near the Saab Showroom there is a weigh bridge for trucks. They can park in there and its very hard to see the car as there is a wall that hides it

    Short Answer: Easy Money!

Longer Answer: Cynical means of gathering revenue and pushing up the detection stats (election coming up remember!).

Also known as: To be seen to doing something about the carnage on the roads, without actually doing anything (constructive)

Maybe it's about time that we started putting up where we see these guys operating? Make it a sticky perhaps? If there's a legal issue though, I will of course remove the following.

On the road from Lucan to Celbridge. As you come off the N4 heading for Celbridge going into the 50kph zone, they're parked along on the left, past the entrance to Weston Park.

On the N4 into town from Lucan, just past the M50/Palmerstown roundabout. They park in on the left before the Esso garage.

The Strawberry beds, just before the Angler's rest on the right hand side of the road as you're heading towards the park.

Coming off the M4 towards Intel. They're on both sides of the road just before the Intel roundabout.

Conyngham Road as you're heading towards Chapelizoid. They hide just past the Garda boat club under the overhanging trees. Very difficult to spot the green van here.

Navan road, just past the Nephin Road. They hide in the entrance to the special school in on the left as you're heading into town.

Mate of a Mate operates one of these. He says they don't actually take the pic until you are right up behind them, so if you see one STAND on the brake pedal (having checked the rear view pedal first, of course!!)
I noticed they had the white Transit in the construction area on the Naas Rd a few weeks ago, in other words, behind the concrete barrier in with all the machines and construction company transits..............
    Sneaky, huh?

Longmile Road heading towards city centre outside Drimnag Castle school. They park the car inside the enterance to the school and hide behind the bus stop or enterance wall.

Longmile Road heading towards Naas Road, outside houses in between Assumption School and E.P Mooney.

I was behind somebody too, they braked and so did I (not even noticing the van or why they braked) and passed it at 30mph. I'd say I was only doing 40mph(60ish kph) coming up to it.

They dont focus on vehicles as such the camera is looking at a point in space that your car is going to pass through, the gatso radar is also focussed into that point.

All of them, the camera records live video onto a specialist VCR and the radar does not have a reset time as such.

I used to service them; and there is some but not much info at http://www.gatsometer.com
They didn't let me keep the technical manuals when I left;)

    Hi lads,

there is a new site going live soon with the details of known speed trap locations in Ireland. It will contain a serachable database so you can search for known speed traps in you own area or by a particular road. We are currently building up a database of known speed trap locations so if you have any then email to report-at-irishspeedtraps-dot-com

    Thanks.

I think that was just a rumour, I don't see how the Gardai can get a site shut down that is just providing information.

I have no problem with speed cameras anyway, but I feel they could have them in better places and not just the usual revenue generating areas.

Saw the boys yesterday on the road from Ballyfermot to Isladnbridge walking back from an FTO they'd pulled. The Garda had his radar gun in one hand, a notebook in the other, and Mr baseball cap in the FTO was bright as a beetroot.
    Ouch!
It's very annoying to drive at the limit there, as everyone gets frustrated and shoots past you. I have learned now to ignore them.
The silly part was that all the rocket-men who escaped points only because the Gardai were busy with FTO man slowed to 50 kph for the rest of the road.
What's the point in that? Its not like there'll be another speed trap on the same stretch, is it?

I've seen them with two speed traps on the same stretch in Ballymun before. The second one was catching all the smart arses who sped up after passing the first one!!

    LOL!!! Fair enough!

There's also a fixed Gatso thing a little further down at the Islandbridge lights. Forcing drivers to slow down before they get to town, I suppose.

The other place I think is a tad cynical is at the Spawell. They hide behind the bus stop there, catching anyone who's not got down to 60 Kph in time.

Then, further down, just before Terenure village, they park just outside this dude's house. his driveway is parallel to the road, but he's taken to leaving his car out there, further away from his house. Maybe to stop them using it, who knows?

No sympathy for speeders who just flout the law, but these places do nothing for public sympathy, as they are just inside limit changes.

That's a red light camera. It's for catching amber gamblers.

I think that is a red-light cam, it's there to catch people running a red light. Have never heard of anyone getting done by it though.

Really? That would explain the lack of road markings, lines etc.
They do anyone here using it? I presume so.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,476 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

AFAIK no one was ever done from that camera. The NRA were testing it to compile stats on red light running.

They were out again today on the N4, esso just before palmerstown.

Does anyone know the range on these vans? are they set at a distance or closer to the van?

If I get 2 notices in the next few weeks I'll be raging.

Seems like trawler fishing, as opposed to just fish in a barrel.

Doesn't sound like it induces safety either if, as someone said, they were going at or under the limit anyway but had to suddenly brake hard. Of course the person behind them and so on would have had to too, just because someone up the line spotted them and the automatic reaction is to stand on the brakes no matter what speed they were doing.

Well then you do have the same problem with them that pretty much everyone else has! :)

I saw the one on the Naas Rd last week. I was traveling inbound so I could do a U turn and to the Texaco across the road from where they were. The amount of cars & trucks that didn't slow down was unbelievable.
I also saw it on the N4 before Plamerstown last Saturday. I had never seen it there before. I think I managed to slow down just in time but again other cars were speeding past. However, I don't believe that there were any cars driving at a dangerous speed. Anyhow, at the end of the Chapelizod bypass (at the top of the hill) were two bikers with the gun out. As this is predictable spot nobody came around the corner towards them at speed.

Top of the hill is a very common spot to see a lad on a bike with a camera alright. I was doing 80kmph coming off the m50 roundabout today when I saw the van. The only problem is I'm not really sure what the limit is on that stretch, there are no noticable signs from the m50 till after the palmerstown crossroads.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 39,746 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

IIRC it is 60km/h up until the Chapelizod bypass

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭ciarsd

Yeah guys its 80KM/H coming down the N4 towards city centre. At Liffey Valley & the lights on the N4/M50 roundabout, it reduces to 60KM/H right the way down to Palmerstown, through the crossroads. It increases back to 80KM/H when you hit the twisties at the Chapelizod bypass.

hmmm, well I was doing well under 60 passing the van....I just wonder how far away it aims from the van.

    Another one...
6.15 yesterday eveing... Conyngham Rd, (south side of Phoenix Park), traffic quiet except poor me.
1/2 way between bus depot and first junction (SCR) pointed outwards,
Red Ford Galaxy (I'd say) dark tinted windows, drivers window 1/2 way down camera clipped to it. Could be doing both outgoing but probbaly incoming traffic most likely. unlucky me.
Funny thing is there was a cop bike parked wight in front of it, and looked like the two "boyz" were having a chat in the front seats. My first impression was someone was being done.. but most likely me i guess.....
