Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Vodafone 3G report

Yippee - I've migrated from 16.8kbs phone line to 3g wireless with vodafone at 460.8kbs.

Not as fast as standard broadband but hugely superior to what I have had to put up with for months.

    Points to note.

New laptops have express card - vodafone doesn't support these yet - I got a second 3G phone and hooked it up using the cables provided. (otherwise the connection could only be made when I'm around with my 3g phone & the wife did not like that!)

Vodafone offer unlimited broadband for €49 /month with fair usage policy - but unless you are downloading hundreds of mb you won't have a problem with this.

Vodafone are working on a USB datacard and this is expected to be out within 3-4 months so you will be able to hook the data cards up to standard PC's.

An absolute cinch to install software and customer service (in newbridge store anyway) was superb.

Overall I can highly recommend it especially if you don't have other broadband options available.

Better still - we are getting our eircom €24 / month line rental cancelled from tomorrow!from

My area is 5km from Kildare town

But you are in Kildare where Intel are, surely these 16.8k lines are not that close to Dublin are they ???? I thought they were a west of the Shannon sort of third or fourth classedness :p

Did you get the data card with this deal? Or can you use both the data card and your mobile with the unlimited deal ?

I'm 5km outside Kildare Town past a forest and 5km from the walterstown exchange which has less than 500 lines on it. - So no hope of BB here for forseeable future. And even if they do, I am the furthest dwelling from the exchange and the capability is meant to be approx. 3km

I have bought a ready to go 3G phone and put the data sim into it and hooked it up to the desktop using the USB cord supplied. Data cards only support laptops and only the pcmia slot which is being phased out.

I'm not much of a techie, but I presume I could do similar using a 3G phone and a PDA such as a Dell Axim (maybe using bluetooth or something)? This would be exactly what I've been hoping for.

Pardon Me for asking you this same question again mcaul - what upload speed are you getting against the download speed of 460.8kbs?

Another question - is the data stream continuous or burst or up/down intermittently?

You can buy a PCMCIA slot for a desktop for about €15.
This would allow the card to be used in any machine with a PCI slot.

Not quite on topic, but it should be in a thread mentioning
getting a 3G phone with USB to allow a desktop to use the product.

he means a pcmcia TO pci adapter card , the card goes IN the pc and the 3g pcmcia card slots into a newly opened hole in the back of your pc , poof.

I got one late last year in Maplins in Blanchardstown for €13.99.
    Plain white box stuff.

Realistically though, that €18.50 isn't far off 15!
eBay throws up a lot at 15-20 even including postage to Ireland.

Vodas routing seems to be more than a Little messed up
They supply you with a public IP upon connection but look how it's routed, Via four different bits of RFC1918 Space, Messy to say the least

Ignore the ping times, I am in an area where I just barely get GPRS coverage

Beware of these. Windows seems to have a lot of problems recognising these pcmcia adapters. I have three pcmcia gprs cards for my desktop adapter. they work on first install but on a reboot the device gets mis-diagnosed.
