percolation hole

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong place - mods feel free to move, but I wasn't sure where it would fit into...

You know the percolation test that has to be carried out on a site, where a hole measuring 300mm sq. x 400mm deep has to be dug, then filled with water to observe how long it takes to seep into the ground - with the time recorded every 100mm until all the water has disappeared?

Well I'm looking for something that will take the human element out of this, so that it's not a case of standing by the hole for however long it takes, which can be quite a while. Obviously it would need to be sturdy enough to withstand the elements etc... Anyone got any suggestions or know of anything along these lines?

    Cheers
