crikey.. the contract could be the problem- but i think RAW do 3 mth contracts and apparently it's a super gym.. slightly out of your way though- near portobello bridge

Thanks wonkagirl but yea it is a bit out of the way, also I'm not sure how easy it would be to park around there... think i'll look elsewhere.

have u tried westwood in sandymount? i'm pretty sure they are a yr contract (or used to be) but in these times, you could get around that.. it would suit your needs, and there is parking on the road, or certainly would be at that time anyway. close to the eastlink too.

there's also sano Vitae in the IFSC clarion which you'd be passing.

i cant think of anywhere in blackrock- although there is an educo- they do short term contracts but by god they make you pay for it! might be worth a 1 week trial there to see if you like it though..

There is a small car park outside it. Might be worth it..they will freeze your membership for you if you're going away, and if you pay by DD you can also cancel your membership with a months notice.

Oh and it's a savage gym.

    Hi

Reading through the previous pages with lots of great advice etc, from a city centre perspective Raw seems to come out on tops. How much is membership?

Also, how busy is it in the evenings and on weekends?

    Thanks!

DD is 55Eur a month, not sure about yearly offers. It's busy enough in the evenings but you'd never be waiting long on equipment, the only annoying thing can be the bootcamp classes as you can't use the track area when they're on. Weekends are grand though.

The annual membership is considerably cheaper than that- i definitely heard of someone who paid 350. I think they have an offer with gosave.ie that if you have a gosave card (which only costs 10eur) you get 15% off or something

I'm looking for an affordable gym accessible from the D9 area. I've been a member of both ALSAA and DCU before a knee injury ended my football-playing days and put my exercise regime on hiatus indefinitely. Mainly concerned about the free-weights setup; there's a perfectly good field round the back of my house, and no paucity of footpaths in Dublin.

    A few for consideration:

ALSAA: This had a swimming pool, running track and decent cardio facilities from my recollection. Weights section was alright but there was no squat rack, just a smith machine. Anyone know what it's like these days?

DCU: Joined the gym in DCU for convenience purposes. Wasn't up to much when I was there; pretty poor free-weights facilities with no power cage or squat rack. The elite gym looked the business but I don't think I'll be making the Dublin team any time soon.

Northwood: Facilities are alright by the sounds of it, but most reviews seem to be pretty negative. Is it worth the money at all?

Ballymun Gym: Sounds alright from this thread, but haven't heard much else about it.

    Any advice appreciated.

It's in an industrial area so good for parking.
Price about 8 to just drop in, about 220 or so for 6 months.
Clientèle is mostly buff guys but you don't feel unwelcome if you're not (I'm not).
About 8 treadmills, 4 bikes and 4 stairmasters for the cardio stuff and lots of free weights.
Dressing rooms with sauna (I haven't used it though).

Best part is that it's never full (when I'm there anyway) so you can always work out without having to wait for machines to be free.

    Hey
I'm looking for a gym to join, a few requirements.

Location: Either near Blackrock village or between there and Fairview (my route home would be via east link)

Opening hours: I'd only be using the gym weekdays after 8 pm, but would never start a workout after 9.30.

Equipment: Free weights, power racks/squat racks etc. A pool/sauna would be nice but not essential.

Another thing is that in January I will be out of Ireland for 3 months, so a short contract would be necessary, that or a six month one with those three months suspended.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Dont know of any gyms in blackrock itself,
there is the crunch fitness in dun laoghaire and the westwood in clontarf which is near fairview, sanovitae in ifsc.

    A few websites list gyms:

www.gyms.ie - not the greatest selection of gyms but it does allow you to search by facility and area etc

www.gymlockr.ie - you can search by facilities aswell and it has a good mapping application that shows the gyms locations,

www.irelandgymreviews.com - seems to have the largest selection of gyms by far but doesnt offer any search options beyond county search, although it does have a map search.

    hope that helps.

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend decent gyms in Dublin 1/2/4? I will mainly be doing weight training using free weights as I do my cardio in the fresh air. However, I find specialist Body Builder gyms maybe a slight bit intimidating (in saying that I was thinking of looking into Pinnacle off Camden St.)

I had a look at SV Fitness in the IFSC because the location is ideal but unfortunately the free weight section is not great. Other options could be Westwood in Sandymount or Clontarf as it is on my way home from work. Has anyone experience of these or others in D1/2/4?

I'd mainly be able to train around 4.30pm and I obviously don't want to be queuing for ages to use equipment. Price is important too.

    Thanks in advance.

I was a member of Sv Fitness and was going in the morning(7am) you were met by the smell of bleach from the cleaner mopping up yesterdays sweat, not very pleasant at that hour of the morning.

Then I got an email saying your membership expired last week do you want to renew. I replied I did not have the money and would they not think of giving a few weeks notice that the membership is due up shortly, i got a reply, we don't like to put pressure on our members what as opposed to have them gymless for 4 weeks(after my next payday)??

I am looking for a new gym, I work in Dublin 2(Grand Canal Harbour) and live in Dublin 15, any suggestions please:)

Hopefully it'll mean they start repairing their equipment for a change.

Howdy..Im looking to join Northwood gym but also save a few quid. looking for two other candidates who might also be looking to join. A single membership is €290, if three people join together its €650, works out at around €215 per person.

    Just wondering,

what do you think the best gym in the IFSC is?

Bear in mind I'm more focused on building muscle rather than doing cardio.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,117 ✭✭✭SanoVitae

The best thing to do is check out all of the gyms in the IFSC before you make a decision.

While we're definitely not a hardcore gym, we're investing in equipment (Power Rack, Trap Bar etc) to accomodate those members who are there to build muscle rather than simply keep fit.

If you need more details, just ask.

    Mod Note

I would just like to draw you attention to this section of the Fitness Forum Charter, if I may
    No txt Spk k

Text speak (a la mobile SMS messages) is not to be used in Forums posts as it can make posts hard to understand for some people. However well known acronyms are ok, as these can be looked up pretty quickly on the web. See this Internet Acronyms list for some of the more common translations

and remind posters that throughout the entire site, txt spk is frowned upon when posting in the forums.

I just joined SanoVitae and was in SVFitness about a year ago. I only use the weights and both have very small floor areas so be prepared. SV may have changed in the last year but when I was there it didn't have a proper squat rack whereas SanotVitae do have a squat rack and also a trap bar (which is really handy for deadlifts). But that said, the squat rack is also the bench press so it doesn't take much for it to be busy.

Basically SanoVitae has 3 benches, 1 squat rack and a small selection of dumbbells plus a few machines - 5 people training free weights and it's very tight. I suspect once I move on from the GVT I'll have problems finding a heavy enough set of Dumbbells so I'll reluctantly be back to barbell bench but I think I can live with that.

On the plus side - if you go early mornings (7am) or early lunchtime (around 12) it's never really busy and I've never had a problem finding somewhere to do my session (yet).

I pay 55 a month which might sound expensive for what I just described but there is a pool + jacuzzi and towels + shower gel/shampoo are provided which is really handy. And there is no contract or joining fee so if I decide it's not working for me I'll just leave.

    Hope that helps

If you want a guarantee that your gear won't be stolen, train at home.
If keys were stolen out of a jacket in a pub, would everyone say don't go to that pub?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

Yeah that's daft, I have been a member since it opened years ago & never had anything stolen, have left many a hairbrush behind though :D

I've never been there first thing during the week but at the weekends there are usually 10-20 people waiting for doors to open so nice & quiet.

I think for the price you pay it offers good value for money.

Looking for a gym in the city centre for the winter - having paid a brief visit to the weather forum, it looks like I'll be needing somewhere warm and dry for some of my Barcelona Marathon training!:pac:

Preferably Dublin 2, I work close to Merrion Square, and preferably not too expensive.
