I don't think Billy Joel envisioned it as a country song, somehow.

Too hard to choose, here are some suggestions though

Rocky Mountain High - John Denver
Coward of the County - Kenny Rogers
Stand by your Man - Tammy Wynette
Devil went down to Georgia - Johnny Cash

I also heard a song the other day which was based on the old joke about what happens when you play a country song backwards - anyone have any idea who sings it? Would love to get a copy of it.

Here's a few just for the craic:

Streets Of Baltimore - Gram Parsons
A Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash
Human Highway - Neil Young (debatable if its country i suppose)
Girl From The North Country - Bob Dylan
That's The Way That The World Goes 'Round - John Prine
Wine With Dinner - Loudon Wainwright III

Devil went down to georgia ain't a johnny cash song. and his version isn't nearly as good as Charlie Daniels one. Not sure who wrote it, think it could be an old trad song.

Anything by G Parsons is fantastic, Also Emmylou. (too many to mention) ~I can't stand country classics like the gambler or coward of the county or other such drivel.
I do have a soft spot for the big rock candy mountain though and Ruby!

Think the OP means naff C&W (eg Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, George Jones, Tammy Wynette) rather than quality country music (like Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons et al). And don't even think of putting Bob Dylan in there!

Some artists seem to straddle both - eg Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell (Rhinestone Cowboy - lame, By The Time I Get To Phoenix - class) and Kris Kristofferson.

I love Me and Bobby McGee by Kris Kristofferson.
And I love the aforementioned By The Time I Get To Phoenix, as well as The Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell.
Also Ode to Billy Joe by Bobby Gentry is a classic.

The golfer John 'Wild Thing' Daly recorded a song called "All my Ex's Wear Rolexes"

Get your Tongue Outta Of My Mouth, Cause I'm Kissing You Goodbye.

Mama Get A Hammer (There's A Fly On Papa's Head) are two other classics by artists whose names escape Pighead right now.

Lyle Lovett is the best EVER!
My favorite of his is "She's leaving Me Because She Really Wants To"

However... The Ultimate Country song in my opinion is David Allen Coe's "You Never Even Called Me By My Name"

Also love most Johnny Cash. Can't beat him!

Jesus I thought I knew a lot about Country music buts theres some here I have never heard of:

I agree Lust4Life that Lyle Lovett is great but Garth is still the best ever

Recently came accross a guy called Marc Mc Guinn who is on an independent label and I think hes great

Some of his stuff is Mrs Steven Rooney and She Doesnt Dance

Also think the Dixie Chicks are great

Yes, Joeblogg, I agree that there are some local musicians who are very capable of writing outstanding songs.

There is a fellow in Minnesota who travels only regionally who has a very unforgettable country song...

"I like to Pee Outside." Brings a smile to every man's face!

And OMG! We forgot Willie Nelson!!!! How could we forget Willie????

    Pighead
    All I can find is

Mama Get Your Hammer (There's A Fly On Baby's Head)
    by
    The Bobby Peterson Quartet

Kissing You Goodbye by Jon Denver
Oh, at first it was like heaven in your heart and in your arms
And paradise discovered in the sweetness of your charms
Yes, and every day a miracle to awake and be with you
And every night in your embrace another dream come true

But castles sometimes crumble some rivers still run dry
And fairy tales are witches tales when the truth becomes a lie
And a pocket full of promises won't buy a diamond ring
And every word you said to me just didn't mean a thing

It's over now, you've gone too far I can't take anymore
Be careful now don't hurt yourself when you walk through that door
I can hardly stand to look at you it makes me want to cry
Get your tongue out of my mouth because I'm kissing you goodbye!

Now I suppose I'll never know why things turned out this way
And why the one you love the most is the one you drove away?
Yes, and I suppose I'll never, ever really understand
How I could think that you'd make me a happy married man

So now I sit and contemplate the reason for it all
The climb to heights of ecstasy the failure and the fall
If a broken heart is purposeful it's in the lesson learned
No matter what the reason is it hurts when you get burned

    Now I don't care, I don't think I'll ever love again
"Kemosabe" used to me good and trusted friend
But now it stands for therapy and all the tears I cry
Get your tongue out of my mouth 'Cause I'm kissing you goodbye
    Bye, Bye, goodbye
Get your tongue out of my mouth cause I'm kissing you goodbye

Well, if We're talking true quality - I've been searching for months for a new copy of Willie Nelson's Thanks Again...

    Thanks Again

Thanks for what little love you gave to me
And thank you for my brief escape from pain and misery
My heart Was Yours and You Made it Live and Die again
But You were Mine For A little While
    So Thanks again.

I’m not sorry for giving all my love to you
And If they ask If I Still Love you
I’d have to say I do
My heart was yours and you made it live and die again
And you made me learn from my mistakes
    So thanks again.

    Nobody says it like Willie!

Not sure who sings it but I've always been partial to "You can put me in prison but you can't stop my face from breaking out!"
