I am looking at getting a secondhand Jaguar XJ6. While I would prefer a post 2003 model, my budget means I will be looking at a 1998-2000 car. Does anyone have much experience which these, any major problems to watch out for? How is reliability? I know running costs are going to be high, but how about servicing and maintenance – are there many independents who would be capable of working on these cars?

I am also looking at importing from the UK as there seems to be better spec’d models over there for better prices.

    Any info appreciated,

    Jim :)

AFAIK, the XJ6 was replaced by the XJ8 in late 1997 or so.

My mistake, yes, it looks like it was replaced by the the XJ8 between 97 and 02. So I guess it is a XJ8 I am after. XJ6 returned with the major revision in 2002.

Reliability is very good, unlike the previous model. Kudos to Ford for a complete quality turnaround

A few tips for running an old big engined high end car:

    1. Do your sums first. Take everything into account, incl. maintenance, depreciation, tax, insurance, running costs and the chance something very expensive needs to be done at some point

    2. Get the right car - have it thoroughly checked out by a specialist. Service history would be important, although most cars in this country don't come with any

    3. If you won't maintain it yourself, find an excellent reliable specialist before you buy the car

Best of luck finding a nice XJ and let us know how you're getting on! Happy V8 motoring :D

He's biased you know! Jags seem to be pretty good value second hand prolly cos of thier old reputation as a gentlemans club conveyance that leaks oil.

Watch out for the engines, 100,000 miles and the engines are scrap and you can't rebuild them, plastic engine liners. I've had a few and have two at the moment, an XK8 and an S type. Service history is vital, most high milers have had a replacement engine already so mightn't be a bad bet just as long as you know.

Bedamned, you're right. They suffer from Nikasil too. I never knew that. Should not affect original Irish cars though (but could affect UK imports having run on dirty petrol). Best check it out, Jim. Another reason why one should have a specialist check out the car before buying
