Hmm, music snobbery ftw. I'm very judgemental of music. I would never judge people on their tastes at all though.
I would call teh OP's tastes bland, that's just me.

Music is an opinionated intrest. There's a lot of stuff out there that would rag my tits but at the same time if it makes someone happy then its all good. I was once a musical biggot in my teens but you soon realise that not everyone takes music as seriously as you do. If a girl's into The Killers/Green Day or Jacques Lu Cont/Opeth/Neutral milk Hotel (The latter being my preferences) that dosen't make FA difference to me. Different people like different music, where would the fun be if they didn't.

 I've got this GREAT CD of a one armed andalucian spoon maker who plays the fiddle with his ears - you'd love it

Why don't you go back to your Rodrigo y Gabriella CD and staring at your WWJD bracelet?

No I'm not. How should I put it... It's like a huge bunch of ****ing skangers going to a music festival, not for a love of any of the music, but simply because it's a big event. There's scumbags polluting the fandom, and it only takes a handfull to ruin a gig.

I'm reminded of the last time I saw Opeth, in Vicar Street. Bunch of gob****es roaring their holes off during the quiet parts of the songs, basically ruining things. At the end of the day, I'm still a fan, but at a certain point they started to attractive some awful scumbag fans, which really ruins the experience of seeing them live.

I went home and thought about it and it's true. If I meet a guy that I find attractive and we start talking about music but he has completely different taste to me, I lose interest instantly. I honestly believe that the type of music you're into reflects your personality. For example, girls who are into Christina Aguilera and Girls Aloud tend to be Bacardi Breezer drinking, pink lipsticked, hen party loudmouths....tis true....they may be lovely girls but if I meet someone who is into that kind of music I respect them less. Jeez, I probably sound like a b*tch but can any of you relate to this?!?!

I would agree with Beetlebum on this one and it makes some amount of sense in my head. Pretty much everyone in my circle of friends listens to very similar music. Its not that I wont be friends with someone unless they agree with my tastes but it just seems to happen that way. People who like the same music are more likely to be likeminded people I suppose. I would also agree that I would give anything thats technically good a listen, be it techno, hip hop, country...etc!

Taster : Pixies, Johhny Cash, De La Soul, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Sufjan Stevens, Zeppelin, Beastie Boys, Erol Alkin..The Kinks etcetc.

As an aside : Dont you love having concerts to look forward to ? Got Daft Punk, Muse & electric picnic tickets! woo.

The girl speaketh the truth. SFA are one of the most innovative bands around and they're still surprising Pighead even after 9 or so albums. Just because the NME love them doesn't mean they're bad.

On topic Pighead and Miss Piggy are chalk and cheese when it comes to music but as the years go on we have both had more time and patience for each others tastes. Case in point Billy Joel concert last Saturday night.
This time 4 years ago Pighead would have laughed for 3 days solid if you told me i'd ever go to a billy concert. And get this it was enjoyable.HONEST!

While I agree with your first point, I think the notion of genre is only bull**** if you read too much into it. The way I look at it is, a genre is a guide to what a band, group or artist might sound like. That's it.

Agreed, people are predisposed to liking certain "types" of music than others. But people won't take the plunge and listen to new types of music. I'm sick of people i know complaining that no good new music has come out in years when they won't listen to anything other than rock.

Reguardless of genre, there's always something new, but people are too lazy to look for it, they expect it to jump out and say "Here I am!"

Yeah, too many people have this crazy notion in their head that 'real music' is no longer being made. They will say this in-between the moutfuls of generic indie, alt-rock, pop and hip-hop they are being spoonfed week-in, week-out.
Personally I think the last few years of music have been the best ever. For someone of my tastes, anyway. New, innovative stuff is always being produced. Most of the time, the only people open enough or aware enough to appreciate it are 14 year-old kids! Very young people are always at the forefront of new musical movements. As I like to say; out with the old, in with the new.

In response to the OP's point: I wouldn't judge someone on the types (ie genres) of music they listen to. But i might judge them a little based on the, lets say, quality of the music.

    i like the classics.
wham, 2 unlimited, boyzone (or 'da boyz' as us fans call them) and that band with dirk digglers brother.
i have some metallica, pearl jam, pixies, cardigans, U2, STP, megadave and other albums like that, but i never listen to them.

I saw this thing on c4 last night, the Truck Festival I think it was called, cool bands, wide variety of music, local produce and stalls, a cool atmosphere (judging from what the people were saying...) and all sales go to charity! And year after year they keep it small to prevent it from becoming overblown.

    Rule of thumb.

From about 78 to 92 music was generally great, with the odd exception. It was exciting and innovative, punk, new wave, new romantics, house, dance, electronic.

From 92 to 95 it was okay. Some great songs, some poor. Dance getting formulaic, britpop all the rage.

And from 95 to now it has been terrible, with the odd exception. Charts dominated by a wave of dance bands, or boybands, or RnB, or Franz Ferdinand/Killer types.

Going to ignore the second bit.
As regards a cd, it's a cd. It's not as if I'd admit it into my collection, if I hated it, just for her. It's not something worth getting even mildly worked up over.

Never find yourself more passionate about music you hate than music you love.

That's a horrible evaluation. Yes, if you look at the charts (depending, of course, on your taste) maybe there has been less innovation and quality in the 95-06 period you quote. I say maybe, but take this random top 10 from 18 January 1986:
1 SAY YOU, SAY ME - Lionel Richie (Motown 1819)
2 THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR - Dionne & Friends (with Elton John, Gladys Knight & Stevie Wonder)(Arista 9422)
    3 ALIVE AND KICKING - Simple Minds (A&M 2783)
4 PARTY ALL THE TIME - Eddie Murphy (Columbia 05609)
5 BROKEN WINGS - Mr. Mister (RCA 14136)
6 TALK TO ME - Stevie Nicks (Modern 99582)
7 SMALL TOWN - John Cougar Mellencamp (Riva 884 202)
8 SEPARATE LIVES - Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin (Atlantic 89498)
9 BURNING HEART - Survivor (Scotti Bros. 05663)
10 TONIGHT SHE COMES - Cars (Elektra 69589)

It's pretty terrible, all told. But, of course, that doesn't tell the whole story in the same year that the Smiths released 'The Queen is Dead', Metallica released 'Master of Puppets', Paul Simon released 'Graceland'...

By no means am I any sort of musical expert, but recently I've been making an effort to get into some new indie-type music. I've gotten into Sigur Rós, Sufjan Stevens, the Shins, the Decemberists, Bloc Party, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Arcade Fire, the Eels, Manu Chao, the Postal Service and many more. Only now I've gotten past some of these better known bands am I noticing bands like Beirut, Jenny Lewis, Kaizer's Orchestra etc. Anyone into 'niche' genres like, say, metal, emo, electronica or even dance will probably tell you that there's a lot more going on now than ever before and I would agree with regard to music in general, and I'm sure almost everyone on this thread could reel off a list of 10 or 15 great bands that I've never even heard of.

Obviously I don't know if the 70s, 80s and early 90s had the same depth of music being made, perhaps they did, but I'd doubt it what with technological limitations. The main thing this era is missing - and perhaps it's precisely as a result of the above - is a really big band that will go down in history - a Pink Floyd, a Bob Dylan, a Led Zeppelin. Maybe that's a good thing, but in any case if any one band was to define the 95-00s era I would hope it would be Radiohead - who are for my money the best band ever.

    Rock n' Roll lives etc!

Alive and Kicking? Broken Wings? Gotta love the stadium bustin' anthems. They alone make it better than any chart since 1995. Throw in Burning Heart, rock on man, and take her out on the dance floor with Seperate Lives.

    Great days, great chart selection.

Although Simple Minds are heroes, granted.

Only the best group to grace this planet. Though got all very bombastic after 1985. Still brilliant, mind you, only not as brilliantly brilliant as they were in their Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call/New Gold Dream/Sparkle in the Rain days.

Lately I've been finding I like the support bands better than the bands I actually went to see. These dudes:

    http://tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/The_Last_Car
    http://www.myspace.com/wearethelastcar

were fantastic live (supporting TMBG) - played three songs about Mr. T out of a seven-song set. And I just noticed on TMBW that they have a fourth song about Mr. T. I'd like to see yer high-falutin' Arcade-Sigur-Shambles pull that one off!!!

These Mexican guys sing alt-rock mostly in Spanish and kick ass. I was expecting a Mariachi band or something when I heard about them. They were playing support to Cake and Modest Mouse:

    http://www.sonic360.com/kinky/

These dudes I saw supporting Editors over the weekend:

    http://www.myspace.com/theendofradio

Great live. The tracks on their MySpace page don't do them justice at all.

Incidentally, wtf is wrong with the lead singer from Editors? Is he on drugs or does he have some bizarre muscular disorder that he's constantly pulling at himself and stretching his arms behind his back?

Could anyone recommend a band simlar in style to Wumpscut in the Bunker Gate Seven and Embryodead albums also pre With Teeth nails.

Basically creepy industrial with decent lyrics and a minimum of crap synth filler and loops. I find the genre to be mostly full of crap.

I am very passionate about music since I bought my first record in 1981.
In terms of 'judging' other people, I find that music partially defines a personality but there are other strands too - film, televison, literature, choice of newspaper etc.

An open-minded attitude to music is good.
A passion for a hobby is good.

People who say they like 'everything and anything' can paradoxically be the most intolerant or ignorant.

In many (but not all) cases a bland fixation with Aslan, The Corrs and Westlife because 'they're nice music' frequently brings one down the following side-roads:

Film: blockbusters only, hatred of foreign / independent cinema. can't watch anything with subtitles
Television: reality television / minor celebrity fixation. never heard of Curb Your Enthusiasm. 'doesn't get' Seinfeld. Would hate Brass Eye if they ever watched it. BBC2 and BBC4 are a big no-no.
    Literature: reading is boring.
Newspaper: Irish Times 'isn't really my type of paper'. Red-top instead.

My favourite band are The Fall.

    When people say
    'Never heard of them'

    I die a little inside.

oh god.. OP, you have some issues. You judge people based on the music they listen to?

    Meaning you're close-minded?

I, for one, listen to ALL types of music. Nothing too unheard of.. and I'm not fanatic (SP) about one band or a genre of music. I like:

Muse, The Strokes, Feeder, The Beatles, Metallica, Iron Maiden, The Chemical Brothers, Faithless, Snow Patrol, U2, Guns n'Roses, HIM, Kings of Leon, QotSA, Radiohead, Stereophonics, RHCP (new stuff not so much), Led Zeppelin, JEW, Thin Lizzy, Green Day (not so much as I used to), AC/DC, Alkaline Trio, Eminem, Audio Slave, Basement Jaxx, Bell x1, Bloc Party, The Killers, The Bravery, Blur, CKY, Coldplay, Dream Theater, Fatboy Slim, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, The Frames, Gorrilaz, Future heads, The Hives, Maximo Park, Modest Mouse, Nightwish, Oasis, Outkast, PLacebo, The Prodigy, Scissor Sisters, Rooney, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Subways

Maybe I don;'t know every band member's life story and maybe I haven't seen them live (yet?) .. does that make me not a fan? no of course not.

    Judge me :D
