Rooney has been sent off in the Amsterdam Tournament. he jumped for the ball and the Porto defender just dropped. Fergie is going mental! Its a joke. No other player in the world would have been sent off for it!

He needs to learn that ref's are watching him and will be hard on him . Till he does he will continue to be "Picked On" ..

    Poor Wayne !

Assuncao did something similar to Solskjaer 2 minutes before and got a ticking off.

hilarious decision, either way, United looking not bad not great. Carrick and Scholes seem to be doing well in midfield, especially the latter. We are missing the lightning pace of Ronaldo, and actually incredibly for United, somewhat lacking in pace.

Yeah and he really did him.

Ridiculous decision. If he misses a game or 2 or 3 because of some 3rd rate Dutch referee it will be a disgrace.

That defender obviously attended the mourinho academy of acting. Some things never change at that club.

Did they not allow for the fact that he might not have been able to see where he was going ? ;)

As regards to the suspensions, it's up to the FA to impose any bans if the Dutch FA pass the referees report to them.

saw it on Sky Sports News

contact with the face but i wouldnt say he smashed his arm into yer mans face. far from it in fact. Ferguson didnt sound furious with Rooney in the piece of interview they showed. more bemused with the refs decision than anything else

he played okay 7/10 for me
gave away the ball a few times
played lovely balls for both Giggs and Park in first half
worked hard in 2nd half but saw very little of the ball

this how i rated starting team, disregarding sending offs. Richardson, Martin, Simpson, Fletcher and Foster came on also. all played resonably well.

    VDS 7
    Evra 7
    Brown 7
    O Shea 8
    Bardsley 6

    Scholes 8
    Carrick 7
    Giggs 6
    Park 8

    Rooney 8
    Solskjaer 8

What a joke. Never a sending off in a million years.

Bit of a worry, two suspensions could possibly carry over into the new season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,147 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Why would they? It was a pre season friendly/tourney. Has nothing to do with the EPL?

Just saw it on Sky news.

Hand in the face. Should perhaps have been a booking. If the ref was not in the position for a fully clear view I can see how it looked, but that's why there's assistants. Porto player though looked like he'd been kicked in the face by a horse!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭BKtje

No way a sending off for Rooney. Booking perhaps. Dunno what game that person who wrote above sky article was watching. Hell, the Sky commentators didnt shut up about how wrong the decesion was for ages.

Scholes was just silly really and both were clumsy and deserved a yellow for each. That said he got a straight red for the second one it seems.

They might be banned, depends on the refs report to the Dutch FA and their report to the english FA who would then decide wether or not to ban them (according to commentators).

Aren't refs supposed to keep their cards in their pockets in tournaments like this?

Never a sending off for Rooney. Scholes had nothing to complain about, when will he learn that he just can't tackle worth a damn!

The Inter vs Ajax match is far worse spirited then the Man Utd vs Porto one was.

Yeah did you see the big mill up, punches thrown and only yellow cards dished out

Rooney should not have been sent off.

it was actually a good game. 4 cracking goals, delighted to see ole get the 3rd, was very happy with displays of evra, park, scholes and especially foster, spending 4 million on another keeper and sending him on loan is madness, the lad is quality with unbelieveable distribution. carrick was subdued enough although some1 said before that carrick often does a lot of vital work that goes unnoticed, only time will tell if that benifits us. overall, very pleased though the rooney sending off was a farce

I agree, apart from first 1o minutes of game, Evra looked very very good!

yeap, but someone in Man Utd general rumours thread disagrees with me on that big time. It makes perfect sense to him

Was also very impressed with what i saw. Came and cleanly took a lot of crosses and stopped some decent shots. He hadnt a hope for their goal. Shoulda been closed down but with 9 men i guess we'll let it pass ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I think he is quality aswell, could make it as United no. 1, but he needs experience in the premiership, and won't get it as an understudy to VDS. If Watford are willing to give him 38 games in the premiership, let it be so, as it'll benefit us in the long run, even if we have to spend 4 millon in order to allow it, I think 4 million for a potential keeper for 10 years is worth it.

    http://home.skysports.com/list.asp?hlid=407940&CPID=8&clid=1&lid=3&title=United+duo+reported+to+FA
The Dutch FA will report Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes to their English counterparts, according to reports.

Rooney and Scholes were both sent off during The Red Devils' 3-1 victory over Porto in the opening game of the Amsterdam Tournament on Friday.

Young striker Rooney was dismissed for catching Pepe in the face with his hand, while Scholes was sent off after two rash challenges from behind in the second half.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was unhappy with Rooney's red card, but had few complaints with the Scholes decision.

Both players could be suspended for the start of the season, with the outcome determined by whether the Dutch FA (KNVB) report the matter to The Football Association.

Match referee Ruud Bossen has informed the KNVB of the red cards and the issue has now been passed on to The FA.

If The FA opt to stand by Bossen's decisions, then Rooney is likely to be suspended for United's games against Fulham, Charlton and Watford, while Scholes will also face a ban.

Ferguson has asked for common sense to prevail in the case of Rooney, but The FA will now have their say on whether the England international will miss the start of the new Premiership season.

I hope the FA see sense and let Rooney off

definately tho why am i getting a bad feeling about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,147 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

TBH the FA should look at a replay of it and will see it wasnt intentional, besides have the portugese teams you ook sideways at them and they are playing dead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭LostinBlanch

Both Mellor and Gerrard were sent off in the final game of the same tournament in 2003, and they didn't get any premiership bans from that.

But of course they didn't play for United.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭BKtje

we'll see what the FA do.

I seem to be the only one that has no problem with this sending off.
He jumped for the ball while leading with his arm and connected with the player. Thats a sending off offence.
The other player overreacted, but unfortunately thats a part of the game now.

Yeah Im sure if this was a Champions League Final and your teams star man was sent off for that you would have the exact same opinion. It was a harsh red card. Happens in most games where a player is caught in the face by an arm.

I'll admit I was wrong, I thought the rules said that it was a sending off but when looking for a link I was wrong.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,28749-2212591,00.html

Thats an article about what Sepp Blatter said about refs cracking down on fouls. For elbowing, it says
Elbowing — reckless use of arm: yellow card. With intent: red card.

I thought that it was a red, with intent or not. And Rooneys wasn't with intent so it should only have been a yellow.

And if it was a player on the other team doing it to your star player, would you be saying the same thing, or calling for a sending off.

No I wouldnt be calling for a sending off. I would be questioning why my centre back didnt attack the ball like any decent centre back should do.

Watching the build up to Oxford V United on MUTV and they have said that Scholes and Rooney can play the first game of the Premiership because the the FA haven't recieved the report yet.
