hi guys,

tried finding answer to this on web but could only get explanations of url's, uri's etc. so sorry if it's a nuisance.

just wondering why some web addresses have no www?

e.g could be just http://wikipedia.org or could indeed be http://www.wikipedia.org

    thanks

The 'www' isn't actually necessary but it's what people have gotten used to so it tends to be included. It also helps differentiate between, for example, ftp.server.com, irc.server.com, etc.

In actuality you could put anything in place of the www when you are configuring a server (boards.ie has http://www.boards.ie/ and I think maybe http://muppet.boards.ie) but it would be a lot harder for people to find.

check out http://www.last.fm/ ..basically it's a plug-in for various music software which keeps an online list of the songs I've listened to.

Boards.ie actually has Wildcard DNS setup so you can put anything you like before Boards.ie and it will work:

    e.g. http://goodshape.smells.boards.ie

www. was used on older setrvers in the past that weren't really smart, it told servers that "I am not using a subdomain". Itisn't necessary now but a habit people got into, and a good one to get into

    freesex.boards.ie , I'm only messin
