In the house I'm in, we use the oil heating and never the fireplace because the room fills up with smoke. It's got an ugly piece of wood blocking off the draught and I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me where i can get a fake fireplace insert - like a mould or something that will block the draft, look like a nice black fireplace with a grate! Does it exist and does anyone know where I can get one?
Or should I paint the existing fireplace black with some special paint and a new grate? It's purely for decorative purposes - any help much appreciated!

    Hi,

There are false firebacks fitted with some gas fires, they are black and look well, I can't remember the suppliers name at the moment but they are available.

Have you tried a "H" cowl to stop the down draught ? even if you don't intend using the fireplace a down draught can cause the smell of soot in the room, not very pleasant.

Just remembered, I think Paramount Distributers Montpelier Hill Dublin 7 have them and some nice fire fronts and grates.
