Just wondering if anyone could help . I'm thinking of buying a Mitsuishi Lancer for my first car. I've a full licence and I've been driving for a while so i wanted more than a little 1 litre micra or something. but not too much more, still gotta think about insurance cos i'm only 21. anyway does anyone have experience of them? the one i'm looking at at the moment is a 1.3 glx if that makes any difference and the year is 2000. what kind of problems are most common with them? what are they like to drive? if anything does go wrong are parts easy enough to get?

Or if you don't think I should get one what would you recommend? I'm looking for something around 1.3 or 1.4. I have between €7k and €8 to spend on the car alone cos i have seperate insurance cash. Thanx

my bro has a 98 lancer 1.3 with 210,000 miles on her, yes miles. it was my mams car she bought it with 18,000 on it so i know the history of the car. it's bullet proof it has never broken down and nothing has ever been replaced. just t belt etc. it's nct'd til feb 08 as well. not bad eh!:D

The Lancer is basically a Colt with 2 extra doors and a boot. Don't mistake them for the Evo which uses the same body but is a different car altogether. They are generally very reliable and servicing and spares cost around the average for this type of car. Not the most powerful 1.3 litre out there as they are 12 valve rather than 16 valve but good enough for Irish roads.

The model you are looking for was available here from 1996 to 2001. They received a mild facelift in 1999 where they got a new front chrome grill. Try and get a late 2001 model as this had electric windows and mirrors and possibly ABS. They are going cheap these days as they don't retain their value like the Corolla, Focus or Golf. You should be able to get a 2001 model for your budget and have plenty of change left over.

Drove an '01 Lancer 1.3 for a while. Never had any problems with it. Lancers are generally reliable and you shouldn't have any hassle. Best of luck with it.

I had 3 different Lancers , all 1.3 Glx

First I bought second hand in 1997 (1994 car)
Second bought second hand in 1999 (1998 car)
Third bough new in 2000 (First Company Car)

I did approximately 100,000 miles between the three and never had a minutes bother. The Lancer is a great car and for the size the 1.3 engine has great poke in it.

I couldnt recommend it highly enough
Just look around you every day and you will see lots of 92,93,94 Lancers still in great shape on the roads. This is a good indicator of the cars longevity
