Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Team : Newcastle United
    Optimistic position : 4th
    Realistic: 6th
Most Important Player: What ever striker we sign to replace Shearer
Best signing: Duff (not much choice yet, but what a bargin!)
Breakthrough Player: O'Brien? (I would say Taylor, Ramage or N'Zogbia, but they have being playing all the time)
Player I would like to see signed : Martins or Yakubu

Yeah, he certainly has the potential to be top class considering he's only 19. I thought he was a centre half when he first signed but it seems his best position is centre mid and he has done well so far. I don't trust him in the holding role just yet but as the supporting midfielder he was the best player on the park against Chelsea. Hopefully it'll be another bargain buy from Feyenoord after Larsson. :)

    Bump!

Makes for interesting reading, and shows up how much we all know about football!

Rossi for breakthrough player? Baptsta for best signing? Chelsea for the quadruple? Liverpool for the league? How different the world was back then! :)

    Arsenal

    Optimistic position: 2nd
    Realistic: 3rd/4th
    Most important player: Henry, Fabregas
Breakthrough player: It's not like he's unheard of but I expect Van Persie to have a big season
Best signing: Thierry Henry, biggest signing of the summer there

I got most of it right. I didn't put down Baptista as best signing anyway!

    Best Signing: Andy Johnson

Maybe 9th is optimistic, but we came 11th last season without playing well, and the team has improved therefore.....................realistic? pessimistic? I'm too biased to know!

    I did pretty well.

I was a bit pessimistic with "9th" as it turned out, but I didn't think we would be 5th on the last week of the season. Blues back in Europe where we belong.

Anichebe has had a good season, and between him and Vaughan, things are good in the striker department.

Arteta was player of the season, so I was on the money there.

Best signing though, I;m not sure. Its a close call between Lescott and AJ. Lescott was perhaps more consistent through out the season, but Johnson got some very important goals.

Me too! Johan Djourou has indeed broken through as I predicted, not that I want to blow my own trumpet or anything!
    Arsenal

    First few same as RwC

    Breakthrough player: Johan Djourou
Best signing: No choice with senior signings, Fran Merida looks a good 'un for the reserves though.

Well if we win Sunday and Blackburn lose I could be right as we are currently 11th and while I got our most important player wrong I certainly got the Breakthrough correct, Gabby has been great.

This just typifies the Newcastle fans point of view on our league standing.

Very disappointing season. but on the bright side, Martins was our best player, Taylor has really gotten better.

But shocking finish to the season, no European football. Not even top half of the table!!

Whoever takes over better be bloody good!!

    Predictions

    Team: Liverpool
    Optimistic: Champions
    Realistic Position: 2nd
Most Important Player: Stevie G - critical he doesnt get peeved with being played as a utiilty man - right, left, up-front - then taken off because he's having an underpar game
Breakthrough Player: Momo to stop giving the ball away and to start scoring and become a top midfielder
Best Signing: Hard to call between Bellamy and Pennant. Pennant's probably the safer bet as Craig might get peeved with being played up on his own and getting no support and with getting rotated.
Hope I'm wrong: Gonzalez to be a big disappointment

Well I got the last one right. The one where I hoped I'd be wrong!

    Optimistic Position : 4th
    Realistic Position : top 7

Breakthrough Player : Sergio Peter, if he gets a run of games ahead of MGP, lol
    Best Signing : Benni McCarthy

wow, did i get anything right ? :)

Well Benni probably was our best signing :)

Lets hope for a top 10 again this season! :)

Yeah they all seem to understand football, i.e. are the only ones constantly writing.....

I think what this means is: "if Chelsea don't finish first, then I'll be supporting someone else"

It's too early for this. I think, whoever dug it up should have waited til the week prior to the first matches.

    Team : Man Utd
    Optimistic Position : 1st
    Realistic Position : 1st
Most Important Player : Cristiano Ronaldo
Breakthrough Player : Anderson (Pique too, if he stays and gets regular football)
    Best Signing : Owen Hargreaves

Formation I would like to see:

    ..............Van Der Sar..................
    ................................................
    Neville.....Ferdinand.....Vidic......Evra
    .................................................
    ........Carrick.......Hargreaves.........
    .................................................
    .................Scholes......................
    Ronaldo.............................Rooney
    ..................Tevez......................

Yes, Im assuming Tevez will join. I expect he, Rooney and Ronaldo will swap positions a lot, only without Ronaldo going up front. I can also see Scholes being used sparingly, with Anderson stepping in for smaller games against the likes of Sunderland, Birmingham, Wigan etc.

I think Ronaldo will be our most important player simply because Scholes will not play as often, and like it or not, when Ronaldo plays well, United play well. The same can be said for Rooney. We have some very impressive backup too, with Nani, Anderson, Giggs, Saha, Fletcher, Pique, Evans, Heinze etc. but one or more of them might leave (obviously not the 2 new boys).

I expect Hargreaves have a huge impact at United, but one that might not stand out too much. He and Carrick would compliment each other immensely. We were found wanting for a gritty, in your face type player in the two Milan matches - I think Hargreaves could solve this.

    My 2 cents.

If anything this thread should be for the weekend before the season kicks off.

Looks like ours are done!! Pompey are having a press conference today and it is expected they will announce John Utaka and David Nugent.

    With those two in place,

    Team: Portsmouth
    optimistic prediction 5th,
    realistic Prediction 8th.
    Most important player: Benjani
    Breakthrough Player: David Nugent
    Best Signing: Sully Muntari
